Although Prometheus had a lot of plot holes, but this did not stop viewers from wanting a follow-up to the Alien prequel. If anything, the loose plot threads of Prometheus made the prospect of a sequel all the more appealing, since this would grant the franchise a chance to clarify some story elements that never quite added up. However, 2017’s Alien: Covenant failed to provide this much-needed clarity.

Alien: Romulus Sequel Update Proves The Franchise Is Taking The Right Approach After $350M Success
Alien: Romulus was a runaway hit both with critics and at the box office, and the latest update about its sequel is encouraging for franchise fans.
By Alien: Romulus’s ending was nowhere near as ambiguous and open-ended as that of Prometheus, but director Fed Alvarez’s movie still steered clear of Scott’s big mistake when it came to sequels.
Alien: Romulus’ Sequel Would Be A Direct Follow-Up To Rain’s Story
Alien: Romulus’ Story Would Be Continued Directly In Alvarez’s Next Movie
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Fede Alvarez confirmed that any Alien: Romulus sequel would be a direct continuation of Rain and Andy’s story. Alvarez itted that he and his co-writer Rodo Sayagues had considered sequel plotlines, discussing what might happen when the pair of survivors arrive in Yvaga and whether the planet is the promised land they imagined. This is a promising start as it means that Alien: Romulus’s sequel could avoid one of the biggest issues with Prometheus’s follow-up. Alien: Covenant scarcely felt like a sequel at all, something Alvarez has already promised Alien: Romulus’s sequel won’t repeat.
The primary problem with Alien: Covenant’s story was the confusing feeling that the movie was both its own beast and a vague continuation of Prometheus’s story.
Alvarez also said that Alien: Romulus’s sequel should not arrive too early, noting that there was a lengthy seven-year wait between Alien and its first sequel, Aliens. However, even if it is a while before viewers see Cailee Span’s Rain again, it is still promising to hear Alvarez talk about a direct continuation of Alien: Romulus’s plot. The primary problem with Alien: Covenant’s story was the confusing feeling that the movie was both its own beast and a vague continuation of Prometheus’s story, resulting in a plot that never felt entirely original but also didn’t wrap up its predecessor’s loose ends.
Alien: Covenant Was Hardly A Sequel To Prometheus (Despite David’s Return)
Alien: Covenant Disregarded Huge Portions of Ridley Scott’s Prometheus Plot
In many ways, Alien: Covenant was the worst of both worlds despite the movie’s high points. It was not a direct sequel to Prometheus, meaning it didn’t make the prequel’s labyrinthine plot any more understandable. The elements of unexplored lore, like Prometheus’s unexplained black goo, remained inscrutable, but the sequel also wasn’t a fully original story that could stand on its own merits. The return of David made it feel like a sequel, but a wholly unsatisfying one at that. Thus, it is good news that any Alien: Romulus follow-up will take another approach after Ridley Scott's disappointing Prometheus sequel.
