Fans of the iconic Alien franchise are in luck because an tabletop RPG should allow them to get up close and personal with a Xenomorph even if they're unlikely to survive the encounter. Ever since the original Alien, the sci-fi horror franchise has been adapted into plenty of games, and while some of them, like Aliens: Colonial Marines, disappointed, the Alien RPG is one of the best takes on the franchise. Aside from extensively fleshing out the universe, nothing better exemplifies the terror of staring down Xenomorph than Free League Publishing's excellent TTRPG.

Announced on Kickstarter, Free League Publishing revealed that it will soon launch the crowdfunding campaign for the second edition of Alien: The Roleplaying Game. While the actual starting date for the campaign has yet to be confirmed, the company does note that it will begin at some point in the fall so fans have some time to prepare for its launch. What has been dubbed Alien 2e will feature an updated core rule book that streamlines the game and tweaks various rules to make it even easier to pick up and learn without worrying about memorizing dozens of stat tables.

What To Expect From Alien 2e's Kickstarter

There's More Than Core Rules Involved

While diehard enthusiasts will undoubtedly be excited to gain access to a revamped core rule book that features new content and artwork, Alien 2e's crowdfunding campaign will also feature some added bonuses. Those who back it on Kickstarter will also gain access to a new Starter Set that includes everything needed to quickly set up the game and play with a group of friends. The Starter Set includes abridged 2e rules, character sheets, custom dice, reference cards, various handouts, and an expanded version of the Hope's Last Day scenario.

Additionally, those who Aliens 2e on Kickstarter can also gain access to the new cinematic scenario boxset Rapture Protocol which "returns to the roots of the Alien franchise" by focusing on a crew on a small star freighter that becomes trapped in a life-or-death situation. Rapture Protocol also comes with a miniature set which should please those who enjoy making their TTRPGs more tangible.

Some may question whether it's too soon for a second edition of the Alien RPG given that the first version only dropped five years ago. Whether the differences in the new edition are significant remains to be seen but at least all the changes will be compatible with the modules launched for the first iteration of the game. With a new TTRPG edition alongside Alien: Earth television series, there's never been a better time to be a fan of Alien.
