Old Man Logan, Age of Apocalypse, Zombie, Earth X and Jane Howlett – the Wolverines of five tragic universes – come to the end of their multiversal journey...but will it be their end as well?

This will climax with a major betrayal, which could have severe repercussions for the team, and their mission – and given the scope of the threat they face, possibly the wider Marvel Universe beyond that.

One Of Marvel's Most Tragic Wolverines Will Betray The Phoenix Force

Weapon X-Men #1 variant cover, featuring the five multiversal version of Wolverine teaming up

Previews for Weapon X-Men have emphasized that the team will have to face its share of internal drama, if it is to have any hope of helping to oppose Onslaught, the villain who recently returned in writer Christoph Gage's related miniseries, The Original X-Men. Assembled by the Phoenix, the five Wolverines include several variants readers will be familiar with – including Old Man Logan and Age of Apocalypse's Weapon X – as well as new versions like Jane Howlett. The team also includes a zombie variant of Wolverine, and the Logan of Earh-X, best known for his "I'm With Stupid," t-shirt.

The latter two are apparently set to cause trouble early in the series. The solicitation for Weapon X-Men #1 asks, "with friends like Zombie Wolverine, who needs enemies?" Advanced material for the second issue suggests that Earth-X Wolverine may face an existential crisis about the tragedy of his existence – and all Wolverines' existences – when the team encounters the one happy Logan in the multiverse. The synopsis for issue #3 suggests readers will find the band of Logans "fracturing fast," and now, Marvel has officially confirmed one of them will turn traitor before the series concludes.

Weapon X-Men seems prepared to offer a sweeping, high-energy Wolverine story, one which puts the character's multiversal potential to great use.

One Wolverine's Betrayal Could Have A Ripple Effect Across The X-Franchise

Weapon X-Men #1, main cover featuring different versions of Wolverine, and Jean Grey, against a cosmic backdrop

As X-Men's Krakoan Era ends, the future direction of the franchise remains uncertain. Series like Christoph Gage's Weapon X-Men and Original X-Men offer a suggestion of what it might look like. No less sprawling and ambitious, but perhaps more focused, more deliberate. At a plot level, these miniseries may also be laying the foundation for future storylines. Certainly, whatever the case may be, Weapon X-Men seems prepared to offer a sweeping, high-energy Wolverine story, one which puts the character's multiversal potential to great use.

Weapon X #4 (of 4) will be released on May 15, 2024 from Marvel Comics.
