Netflix releases a trailer for Constance Wu.
In Always Be My Maybe, Wong portrays Sasha Tran, a celebrity chef with relationship problems. When Sasha returns home to San Francisco, she’s reunited with Park's Marcus Kim. The two haven’t seen each other for 15 years, and they now have entirely different lifestyles. Sasha seemingly has a glamorous life, while the musician Marcus lives at home and works for his father. Despite their previously unresolved differences, the two characters re-build their friendship and realize that romance could be a possibility, at least until other men come into the picture. Written by Wong, Park, and Michael Golamco (Grimm), Always Be My Maybe marks Khan’s feature directorial debut.
Netflix released a trailer for Always Be My Maybe. The clip begins with a stylized sequence that establishes Sasha’s celebrity chef lifestyle, brash personality, and empty relationship. The trailer then transitions to Sasha’s San Fran return, which introduces Park’s aloof character, Marcus. A brief flashback montage offers context for their relationship backstory, which dates back to at least 1996 and leads to a sexual encounter in 2003. From there, Marcus’ father Harry enters the picture, allowing for a commentary on cultural customs and a character that’s even more brutally honest than Sasha. In the second half, Marcus struggles with his feelings, while Sasha lashes out at her boyfriend. The trailer follows the typical romantic comedy tropes, albeit with an Asian-American perspective. By the end, the concept of “What If?” unsurprisingly comes into play, and a major Hollywood star appears - one who could destroy Marcus’ romantic hopes.
