Spanning a 26-year career, voice actor Dee Bradley Baker has built an ever-growing legacy in the animation and gaming industry. ing the ranks of voice actors such as Phil LaMarr (Green Lantern) and Kevin Michael Richardson (The Joker), Baker has voiced hundreds of characters, many of them beloved.
He voices many additional characters in a wide range of shows and movies, including Elena Of Avalor, Ben 10, Happy Feet, Jimmy Neutron, Family Guy and The Powerpuff Girls. Baker's first breakout role was the voice of Dad in Cow & Chicken and I Am Weasel. Since then, he has worked on many Cartoon Network, Disney and Adult Swim shows.
Waddles (Gravity Falls)
Waddles is Mabel's pet pig and best friend in the whole world. She won him as a prize at a "Guess The Pig" booth at the fair, after she fell in love with him. The cute pig said her name, "Mabel," but in pig "oinks."
Waddles speaks limited English words and phrases in "oinks," which are voiced by Dee Bradley Baker. In one episode, Waddles is voiced by Neil deGrasse Tyson, after he eats some brain jelly and builds himself a computer that enables him to communicate in proper sentences.
Lion (Steven Universe)
Steven Universe's resident magic pink lion, Lion, is Rose and Steven's friend. Lion becomes Steve's friend, pet and guardian after they meet in the desert. Like Waddles, Baker voices Lion realistically. Lion does not speak, so he only communicates using his eyes, body language and animal sounds.
As a lion, he often purrs and roars. Sometimes he also grunts. As usual, Baker is able to communicate a host of emotions through the rare sounds that Lion makes. Lion acts very much like a cat. He loves fitting into small boxes and he often wants attention from Steven.
Daffy Duck (Space Jam)
A character that needs no introduction, Baker also voiced Daffy Duck in the 90s classic, Space Jam. It was one of his first roles as a voice actor, having begun his career a year earlier, voicing Paperboy in the 1995 TV series, Timon And Pumba.
Baker voiced both Daffy Duck and the Tasmanian Devil in the movie. A character voiced by many actors over many decades, Baker voiced Daffy Duck perfectly. In 2015, he reprised the role in New Looney Tunes, also voicing the character Squeaks The Squirrel.
Klaus Heissler (American Dad!)
One of his most popular roles to date, Klaus Heissler is the Smith's pet goldfish with the brain and memories of a human. His psyche was removed and put into that of a goldfish in the CIA's misguided efforts to prevent from winning the Winter Olympics.
Klaus has a strong German accent and is known for constant outbursts of anger because he is depressed with his new life and living conditions in a small fishbowl. Klaus is also Baker's most widely-recognized voice role.
Appa (Avatar: The Last Airbender)
Aang's animal spirit guide and best friend, Appa is a flying bison who flies by bending the air. He's an animal that does not speak in human and often grunts like a bison in response to people speaking to him.
Baker doesn't just voice Appa, he also voices all the animals on Avatar: The Last Airbender: the movie and the television series. Baker is an expert in voicing realistic animal sounds that would otherwise be impossible to conjure, especially when audiences factor in the regular changing emotional states of animals.
Clone Troopers (Star Wars: The Clone Wars)
An army of clone soldiers, Clone Troopers were bred to be superior soldiers for battle. Being clones, they are all the same people, from their uniforms and subservient personality to their voice. The Clone Troopers often react to the stimulus of war surrounding them. This includes shouts of joy, pain and astonishment, as well as exclamations of surprise, such as "What the hell?"
Baker does not need to bring too much emotional-nuance to his work with Clone Troopers, because they are soldiers who only know war and aggression.
Perry The Platypus (Phineas And Ferb)
Secret agent, spy, loyal frenemy of Dr. Doofenshmirtz and loving pet to Phineas and Ferb, Perry has no trouble navigating his world without the power of speech. Even more bizarrely, he understands English perfectly. Perry is known for his distinctive low grunt, which he uses to communicate with everyone around him.
Perry's growls are distinct from Baker's usual voice work because the platypus does not have much range of emotion in his sounds, especially when he is content and at home with Phineas and Ferb. In essence, he sounds like a big, dumb animal. He uses this as a smokescreen so that his family does not realize he is a very intelligent animal.
Squilliam Fancyson (SpongeBob SquarePants)
Hot, rich, eight-pack holder, Squilliam Fancyson is Bikini Bottom's playboy who, naturally, came from money. Since Squilliam and Squidward are basically the same person (although both men are too vain to notice this), Baker voices Squilliam to sound very similar to Squidward.
He used a nasally and uptight voice that is dripping with condescension whenever Squilliam speaks. Even more impressive, Baker voices Squilliam's laugh in near-identical perfection to Squidward's. He also voiced Bubble Bass, SpongeBob's nerdy fry cook enemy who tries to ruin SpongeBob's reputation as a great fry cook.
Cinnamon Bun (Adventure Time)
The half-baked cinnamon bun (a play on his clumsiness and generally ditzy behavior), Cinnamon Bun is another of Baker's speaking voice characters. Cinnamon Bun speaks as his half-baked nature suggests.
He sounds half-baked, stupid, and insecure. He hesitates a lot and his voice has a low growl that conjures up an unintelligent character. In later episodes, the tasty breakfast pastry is fully baked and becomes wise, articulate and confident.
Numbuh 4 (Codename: Kids Next Door)
A member of the Kids Next Door, Sector 5, the best sector in the KND organization, Numbuh 4 is known for his aggressive and reckless personality. He is an expert in hand-to-hand combat and a believer that warfare solves problems over agreements and discussions.
An Australian boy, Numbuh 4 has a temper and often speaks in an aggressive, grumpy and angry tone to fit with his personality. Numbuh 4 is one of Baker's most interesting voice characters because he is a complex character who has more to his personality than his apparent abrasiveness and unintelligence.
