“Ba’al” details the disturbing story of a young wife, Liv Whitley, who accidentally resorts to sinister practices to have a successful pregnancy. She eventually realizes her miracle baby has a connection to a pagan demon, Ba’al, that haunts her at night. In this episode, Ryan Murphy goes further back to his horror roots with satanist demons and spirits rather than cultural, killer horror stories of the season.
American Horror Stories episode 5 racks up a wider variety of characters than “The Naughty List” but still only focuses on a few key players. Here’s a breakdown of all the actors and their corresponding characters in American Horror Stories’ “Ba’al.”
Billie Lourd As Liv Whitley
The protagonist of “Ba’al” is Liv Whitley, a young married woman who desperately wants to have a baby. She has inherited wealth that has allowed her to spend years of money on fertility clinics. After using a sinister fertility doll, Liv finally becomes pregnant, but the horrifying consequences are more than she bargained for. Billie Lourd is one of American Horror Story’s most notable recurring actors, having ed the show in a main role for AHS: Cult and appearing in each season since. Aside from acting in AHS, Lourd also starred in Carrie Fisher’s real-life daughter, all three Star Wars sequel movies.
Ronen Rubinstein As Matt Webb
Ronen Rubinstein plays American Horror Stories' Matt Webb, a young actor and Liv’s husband who is typically gone on night shoots when Ba’al frightens Liv. He becomes worried about her after she obsesses over a demon in their home. Rubinstein is best known for playing T.K. Strand on Dead of Summer.
Virginia Gardener As Bernadette
Bernadette, played by Virginia Gardener, is the receptionist at the fertility clinic in "Ba'al" who gives Liv the fertility statue that conjures a sinister spirit. Once the baby is born, Liv seeks out Bernadette to get rid of Ba’al. Gardener’s prior acting credits include playing Karolina in Runaways, The Goldbergs.
Kimberley Drummond As Emma
Emma is Matt’s female friend and Rory's wife, who comes over for dinner and plays with the Ouija board. Emma's actress Kimberley Drummond is best known for portraying Janet on Netflix’s Fuller House reboot series.
Chad James Buchanan As Rory
Rory, played by Chad James Buchanan, is Matt’s college friend who initially suggests they play with an Ouija board at a dinner party. Buchanan previously contributed to American Horror Story as Stu in Apocalypse. He also portrayed characters in The Inbetween and Star series.
Jake Choi As Stan
Stan is another of Matt’s best friends from film school who brags about being a talented sound designer. American Horror Stories' Stan is portrayed by Jake Choi, who previously played Miggy Park on The Sun Is Also a Star.
Ba'al ing Cast & Characters
Vanessa Williams as Dr. Eleanor Berger: Liv’s therapist who meets with her about postpartum depression and struggles with connecting to her baby. Williams is notable for portraying Anne-Marie McCoy in the The Flash.
Misha Gonz-Cirkl as Norma: Liv and Matt’s housekeeper who assists in caring for the baby. Gonz-Cirkl previously had guest roles on several television shows like Grey’s Anatomy.
Michael B. Silver as Dr. Mounds: Liv and Matt’s fertility doctor. Before American Horror Stories, Silver played Ken in Royal Pains and Leo in NYPD Blue.
