Judge Katy Perry declared American Idol season 21 Top 12 finalist Colin Stough "the Brad Pitt of country music" after his stunning acoustic performance of Robyn's "Dancing On My Own." Colin is an 18-year-old HVAC technician from a little town outside of Amory, Mississippi. He auditioned for American Idol when his mom signed him up, knowing that he would never do it himself. He sang "Simple Man" by Lynyrd Skynyrd, impressing the judges, who all gave him votes of "yes." Although Colin has so much star quality, he didn't have confidence on stage because of his lack of performing experience. However, "Dancing On My Own" was his breakout performance.
In an interview with American Idol judge Katy Perry expressed that Colin made her a "believer" after his performance. She itted that in earlier performances, Colin didn't "knock it out of the park" for her, but "the Robyn song was one of the best performances of the whole night." Katy continued by explaining that this moment was life-changing for Colin. She said, "He really sealed his deal. It only took a different moment. I think he literally turned his life around." Katy proclaimed, "He's the Brad Pitt of country music. He's got the taste and the song choice and the vocal ability--he really showcased it tonight."

American Idol judge Luke Bryan, who ran on stage to hug Colin after his performance, said that he relates to the young singer. He shared, "When I get a country kid like Colin, I can see myself in him. On the show last night, I really, really challenged him to be more aggressive with that mentality. He went out there, and he did a great job." Colin appreciated Luke's hug because it "really took a relief off my shoulder because I love constructive criticism. I love it." As for his song choice, Colin said, "The good Lord laid something on my heart." He added that he was "really proud of myself."
Every season on American Idol, the judges and viewers wait for each contestant to have a moment. "Dancing On My Own" was Colin's time to shine. The raw talent and emotion that he brought to the performance was extraordinary. Colin could have been inspired by Calum Scott's slowed-down version of Robyn's song, but his addition of the acoustic guitar instead of a piano made it even more intimate. He pushed his own boundaries with this song and proved that he is an authentic artist. Colin has always been a good singer, but this performance elevated him to greatness.

He is an endearing person, in addition to a gifted singer, musician, and artist. If Colin continues to perform at this level, he is on a direct path to superstardom and being crowned the next American Idol.
