Though Sony’s State of Play today was mainly focused on Insomniac Games’ title Among Us’ imminent debut on PlayStation consoles, coming with exclusive cosmetic items. Though Among Us began as a small, mostly unknown, title available on PC, InnerSloth's social deception game has exploded over the last year, reaching new audiences on most major gaming platforms. That PlayStation is now ready to that list was an unexpected piece of news to come out of its Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart showcase.
Some of the presentation’s Rivet's high-flying moves. While many eagerly anticipated seeing more of Ratchet and Clank's new character and getting more game content announcements, few would have guessed that Sony's State of Play would offer it to them through Among Us.
In a short segment of the PlayStation-centric show, InnerSloth revealed that Among Us would be coming to the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles sometime this year. To commemorate the occasion and to celebrate the release of Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, the developers are introducing special, console-exclusive Ratchet and Clank skins when the game launches on its new platforms. Among Us players will be able to disguise crewmates with a pair of Lombax ears and a familiar-looking orange jumpsuit. Not to be left out, Clank will also the game as a handy pet companion. The team's later social media post also highlights the fact that the PlayStation versions of the game will come with crossplay.
The promised crossplay feature will connect PlayStation owners to an already vast network of platforms that currently offer Among Us, which should make finding fellow crewmates easier. The game first came to the Nintendo Switch back in late 2020, and in fact the sudden extra work this thrust on the developers might have caused a delay to the release of the long-awaited Airship map. Xbox announced the game's 2021 debut on its consoles around the same time.
While today's announcement was largely unexpected, it is not surprising that Sony would want to get Among Us on its consoles. The murder-filled online multiplayer made its way to the top of of many 'best of' lists last year, which was reflected in the game's financial success. The PlayStation maker is surely looking to share in some of that profit when the title launches on its platform. Though today's trailer did promise a 2021 release window, it did not specify the exact date Among Us would come to the consoles, so fans will have to watch for more news in the future.
