Steve Carell helped co-create a series similar to shows operate in the mockumentary style format popularized by The Office, and both are workplace comedies, interested in the lives and foibles of the people working there.
While Brooklyn Nine-Nine has a bit more of a hopeful tone, a characterization of a lot of Michael Schur comedies, The Office has a harsher edge. It's not afraid to mock mercilessly and punish characters for the sake of a joke. It's an extremely effective and funny style, and why the show lasted so long and remains popular. There have been few shows of the same quality since, though not for lack of trying. There have been plenty of attempts to create a new hit comedy series, some successful, some not, and at least one created by Steve Carell himself.
Angie Tribeca Was A Cop Comedy Created By Steve And Nancy Carell
The Series Premiered On TBS And Ran For Four Seasons
Angie Tribeca is a network sitcom that premiered in January 2016 on TBS and lasted for four seasons. The show, co-created by Steve Carell and his wife, Nancy, is a parody of police procedurals with Rashida Jones as the titular detective. Angie Tribeca is a detective within the LAPD's fictional unit, the RHCU (Really Heinous Crimes Unit), and if that name doesn't give away the series' comic sensibilities, then the visual gags, one-liners, and deadpan deliveries of ridiculous crimes will.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Most Underrated Character Makes A Surprising Return In CBS' Ghosts (Well, Sort Of)
Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s most underrated actor makes an appearance in Ghosts season 4, episode 15 “The Bachelorette Party” playing a similar role.
A mystery-of-the-week style show, Angie Tribeca stars Angie and her new partner, Jay Geils (Hayes MacArthur), as they investigate a new, often absurd, crime every episode. The series has a 96% overall on Rotten Tomatoes and was praised for its unique storytelling and sharp wit. While it went fairly underseen, it's a series worth returning to.
Angie Tribeca Will Feel Familiar For Fans Of The Office
The Shows Have A Similar Sense Of Humor
Rashida Jones played Karen Filippelli in The Office in season 3, and returned for a handful of episodes in successive seasons. She left a big impression on the show as Jim's (John Krasinski) girlfriend just before Pam (Jenna Fischer), and was a fairly important part of one of the best seasons of The Office. It's a familiar face for fans of The Office, and like Parks and Recreation, Angie Tribeca benefits from having the charming and talented Jones at the center of the series.
Nancy Carell appears in The Office as Michael Scott's realtor Carol Stills.
What's more, the Carells seemed to have learned a few things from their time on The Office, and the sense of humor of Angie Tribeca is very similar to the former show. Both series have a caustic sense of humor and aren't afraid to let a joke hang in the air until it stops being funny, and then comes around to being funny again. The Office also treats many of its characters like fools, as does Angie Tribeca, and even the protagonists are consistently teased and goofed on. It's a biting sense of humor that The Office fans will appreciate.
How Angie Tribeca Compares To Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Angie Tribeca Is More Satirical Than Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Angie Tribeca and Brooklyn Nine-Nine share a similar setting. Both take place in a police station, though Angie Tribeca is in particular parodying classic police procedurals of the SVU and CSI flavor, while Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a workplace comedy that just so happens to be set in a police station. Brooklyn Nine-Nine never takes itself seriously, and the world is as wacky as the characters, meaning anything at any time is possible.
In Angie Tribeca, everything is taken seriously, too seriously, which is where the humor comes in. Everything in Angie Tribeca gets flipped on its head at one point or another, and the comedy comes from that flip in a world that is right side up. Whereas in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, the world is already flipped on its head, and the comedy comes from oddball characters interacting in such a world. Steve and Nancy Carell, and Rashida Jones combine aspects of The Office and Brooklyn Nine-Nine to create something unique in Angie Tribeca.
