With the new year comes new fish and critters to Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The two hemispheres of the world are firmly in the grips of their respective seasons; winter in the north, and summer in the south. As always, the bugs, fish, and deep sea creatures available to players will change, with some departing and others arriving. The most exciting arrival to January is New Year's Day on January 1st, welcoming in 2023.

Considering the variety of events the real world holds on January 1st, players may need to cheat time in Animal Crossing: New Horizons to enjoy the festivities. They can also use this mechanic to play through a Fishing Tourney on January 14th before or after the date. The Southern Hemisphere will be privy to another Bug-Off on January 21st, continuing its summer celebrations.

Animal Crossing New Horizons Fishing Tourney Tournament

The majority of the New Year celebrations occur on December 31, as the island counts down the last moments of the year. When midnight strikes and the date becomes January 1st, a two-hour firework display will begin. During this celebration, players can purchase a light stick, party poppers, and 4 New Year hats.

With the year established, players around the world can take part in a Fishing Tourney on January 14th. Players talk to C.J and activate a tourney round between 9am and 6pm and give him fish until 8pm. After the first day, players must pay 500 bells to participate in a tourney round. These rounds involve players catching as much fish as possible within three minutes. Fishing points can be redeemed for 13 items and 3 trophies.

If the island is in the Southern Hemisphere, players can participate in a Bug-Off hosted by Flick. Bug-Offs are a staple of summer in Animal Crossing and involve catching as many bugs as possible to earn various bug-themed awards. Bug-Offs have been occurring for the last few months for Southern Hemisphere players, so this isn't major news. This month's Bug-Off will occur on January 21st. January is heavily skewed for the Southern Hemisphere in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, but the Northern Hemisphere can still enjoy catching the same bugs, fish, and creatures from December.
