Since Animal Crossing: New Horizons has the ability to add in new content through DLC and updates - including the Brewster's Roost addition - one of the best things the game could do is update its many, many puns. Animal Crossing is absolutely filled with puns, and while they can be somewhat hilarious once or twice, the cycle of seeing the same "Sea bass... no, wait, it's at least a C+" over and over again is likely exasperating to many.
There are a lot of bugs, fish, and sea creatures Animal Crossing: New Horizons players have the opportunity to collect, and each and every one has a unique line of dialog for when it is obtained. Some of these jokes or puns are better than others - Animal Crossing's sea bass joke at least makes players think a little bit, while its comment about long locusts ("Or, as I call it, a looooooocust") leaves a lot to be desired. The problem is that there is only ONE of these dialog boxes associated with every animal, fish, or insect - and players will be seeing the same one a lot.
Many iconic video game dialog lines have arisen through repetition. "I used to be an adventurer like you, but then I took an arrow in the knee" would not be as memorable as it is if Skyrim players hadn't heard it many, many times throughout their adventures. However, bad jokes (and bad puns) don't always sound better the more they are repeated - often, the opposite is true. Animal Crossing: New Horizons lets players change villager greetings and catchphrases, but its jokes are static and, after many hours of playtime, simply uninteresting filler. Including Brewster in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is clearly a sign developers are listening to fans; now, fans need to ask for better puns like they asked for Brewster.
How Animal Crossing's Joke Problem Could Be Fixed
In the same way that players can change Animal Crossing villager greetings, the game could implement an option to modify what the player character says when obtaining certain items. This would add to New Horizons' many personalization and customization options, and it would help players feel like they were more connected to their avatar, but would likely be difficult to implement.
Another, much simpler option would be to just add to the pool of available jokes and/or puns for each animal, fish, and insect in Animal Crossing. While this would absolutely require a lot of writing from the Animal Crossing: New Horizons developers, it would be a welcome surprise if someone caught a common butterfly and heard literally anything other than "Shouldn't all BUTTERflies be yellow?" when Animal Crossing: New Horizons' Brewster's Roost update drops.
Because Animal Crossing: New Horizons is based around doing repetitive actions on a day-to-day basis in real time, it is important to keep players feeling like they are always progressing and moving forward in some fashion. While building up the island and paying off loans to Tom Nook give a healthy sense of progress, seeing the same jokes over and over (and over) again can make some days in Animal Crossing feel just like every other. Adding new puns in Animal Crossing: New Horizons' next update would go a long way towards making the game feel as fresh as a freshwater goby - or else players might think about going bye-bye themselves.
