For some people, the couple's first kiss is an ever-elusive one that only transpires during an emotional finale if at all. However, the industry's newest couple from Anyway, I'm Falling in Love with You are bucking the trend. After all, friends Kizuki and Mizuho actually kissed by the end of the anime's first episode.
Shocking, right? This kind of forward behavior is almost unheard of in romance anime as a couple's "happily ever after" is contingent on them even getting together. Each romance's problems normally stem from the couple's inability to communicate, leaving the leads unsure of whether the object of their desires reciprocates their feelings. So once a confession and kiss happen, where can an anime romance go? Anyway, I'm Falling in Love With You wants to find out, and it has given enough room for Kizuki and Mizuho to explore that space.
Anyway, I'm Falling in Love With You Wants to Break Cliche
The Romance Is Based on the Manga by Haruka Mitsui; Anime Production By Typhoon Graphics
In the anime, it's very clear Mizuho never considered Kizuki as someone other than an annoying crybaby from her childhood. The prospect of romance is so ridiculous to her that when Kizuki initially confesses to her on a staircase with a birthday cake in tow, she chucks it up as just a joke. Even mere moments before their first kiss, Kizuki tries several times to make Mizuho see him as a man, and she angrily rejects him each time. So in the end, his kiss was the ultimate way of trying to change Mizuho's mind.
The fact Mizuho is so dead set against the idea of romancing Kizuki is definitely going to cause promises, and their first lit the fuse. It's also worth noting Mizuho already has a crush on an upperclassman and even confessed to him earlier in the anime's premiere. The reason why she's so down when Kizuki confesses to her is partially because she was still hung up on her rejection.
It seems very likely Mizuho won't be able to give up on her crush, so we will have a love triangle on the horizon. After all, Kizuki had told the upperclassman to stay away from Mizuho, so the deck has been stacked. Now, we have to see what comes from the ploy.
While Rare, A Few Romance Anime Have Nixed Slowburn Love
Pucker Up, Boys and Girls
You may think it is rare, but Anyway, I'm Falling in Love with You is not the first to speed run a slow burn kiss. More than a few romances have featured a quick kiss. Some are on accident while others are explained away under rather upsetting circumstances. For instance, More Than a Married Couple, But Not Lovers shows a non-consensual kiss between two characters, Yakuin and Watanabe, that stirred controversy.
There is also the anime Vampire Dormitory, the first kiss between the vampire Mito and human Ruka is written off. Mito finally kisses the human Ruka during a fireworks display at the end of a traditional Japanese festival. However, as he had bitten her lips moments before, Mito is able to blame the kiss on the fact there was blood on her lips, hiding his true intentions.
Hopefully, Anyway, I'm Falling in Love With You will not follow after some of its contemporary romances and give its couple a fair shot. Mizuho and Kizuki are set to have a sweet romance, but their first kiss has most definitely troubled the waters. Kizuki's forwardness has stripped Mizuho of choice, leaving her with a kiss she didn't want in the first place. Now, the couple has to work backwards to save their romance before it even begins, and the drama of it will leave fans hooked.
