It is no secret that anime has been getting more popular and lucrative over the years, with streaming platforms and businesses investing more and more into the medium. And now, one of the giants of the streaming world has made people aware of their intent to dive deeper into anime and bring more content to fans both in Japan and the world.

In a recent interview with Variety, Kelly Day, Vice President of International for Prime Video, and Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon's MGM Studios, discussed Amazon’s plans to acquire more Japanese content for the platform. Despite having a large subscriber base in Japan, Amazon aims to expand its offerings by acquiring additional anime licenses. The team is actively working on a slate of series for the next few years, signaling the company's ongoing commitment to enhancing its content library and strengthening its presence in the Japanese market.

Prime Is Eyeing More Anime Over The New Few Years

While the company is also ramping up the acquisition of K-dramas and live-action series like Oshi No Ko and The Silent Service, Salke confirmed that anime was a priority for them and they are working on bringing more to the platform and that there are a lot of exciting projects currently at work. This can already be seen with acquisitions like Gundam GQuuuuuuX. Japan is one of Amazon's biggest markets outside of the U.S., and it is pursuing more licenses for original anime to keep up with tough competition in the anime market, with giants like Crunchyroll, Netflix, and Disney Plus.

One of the most exciting things we’re doing here in Japan is talking about our plans for ramping up those that content strategy for the next several years.

- Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon's MGM Studios.

Amazon Prime is already home to some of the best and most popular anime out there, such as Vinland Saga, Houseki no Kuni, Ghost in the Shell, Death Note, Neon Genesis Evangelion and many more, making them one of the best streaming platforms for the medium. However, this is much less compared to some of the other giants in the industry, and while they are a great option for fans, Prime needs a bigger catalog of series to compete, and it is great they are committed to doing so.
