The first Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe early next year. Ant-Man 3 brings back the core creative team, as director Peyton Reed returns to helm the trilogy capper. The light-hearted MCU franchise is taking a different approach with the threequel, though, as the movie has been described as darker in tone. This is an understandable switch for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania considering the film features Kang the Conqueror.
There has been great excitement for Ant-Man 3 ever since Marvel Studios confirmed the Phase 5 movie would include Kang as its villain. Jonathan Majors' debut as He Who Remains in Loki season 1 immediately made him a fan-favorite villain, but Marvel's plans for Kang also officially include returns in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. Still, little is known about Kang's motivations in Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania. There is also still interest in seeing Evangeline Lilly return as Wasp and Kathryn Newton take over the role of Cassie Lang, who will become a superhero.
Now, Marvel Studios has released the first trailer for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ahead of its February 2023 release date. The trailer sets up the movie's plot, where the Ant-Man team return to the Quantum Realm and encounter Kang the Conqueror. The Ant-Man 3 trailer introduces Kang and his massive army and teases the eventual fight between Ant-Man and the multiverse-level threat. The footage also confirms Bill Murray's role.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania's Trailer Makes Kang An Even Bigger MCU Villain
The Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania trailer focuses on various parts of the sequel, but the arrival of Jonathan Majors' Kang is the most notable. The trailer intriguingly sets up this Kang variant as someone who might be a bit more of a friend than a foe. He can be heard seemingly making a deal with Ant-Man to get him and the rest of his family home safely, but what Kang wants in return is not revealed. The tease that Ant-Man could help Kang is just another sign of how big of a threat he is for the MCU, as Ant-Man 3's trailer suggests he has a massive army to him and could manipulate Scott Lang into helping him.
Since Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is just part of Marvel's Kang plans, the movie will be critical to helping the MCU further set up Jonathan Majors' lead villain for the Multiverse Saga. It would seem that after meeting a peaceful version of Kang in Loki that Ant-Man 3 could feature a variant that is slightly more sinister. Previous Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania footage teased Kang's history of killing Avengers. This could allow the sequel to be the place where audiences begin to understand exactly how terrifying of a threat Kang is to Ant-Man and the other Avengers.
