Before even hitting theaters, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has broken the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline, and it isn't the first time the massive franchise has fumbled its ever-complicated history. The film, set to release on February 17th, centers around Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and his companions as they become trapped in the Quantum Realm, where they will encounter the villainous Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors), setting up many of the future events within the Multiverse Saga. As such, Quantumania has been marketed as one of the most important MCU movies in recent years, though trailers suggest that the film gets certain details about the franchise's timeline incorrect.
Quantumania will heavily feature Cassie Lang, now portrayed by Kathryn Newton and her relationship with her father, Scott. A recent clip for the film showed Cassie and Scott arguing in a car over her recent use of Hank Pym's technology. When Scott voices his wish that she could just live a "normal life," Cassie scoffs at the notion, recalling Yellowjacket's attempt to kill her in the climax of the first Ant-Man movie. Although Cassie claims to have been six years old during this seminal event, her assertion simply doesn't line up with the pre-established timeline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, raising eyebrows about the validity of her statement.
How Old Is Cassie Lang In Each Ant-Man Movie?
On the cusp of becoming the superhero Stature in Quantumania, Cassie Lang has grown up quickly in the Ant-Man franchise--though not as quickly as the film might have audiences believe. Quantumania maintains that Cassie was six years old during the events of the first Ant-Man movie, but she was actually several years older. Although Cassie's age isn't specifically mentioned in the first film, Ant-Man and the Wasp establishes her as being ten years old. Since Ant-Man takes place in the summer of 2015, a little over two years prior to the events of Ant-Man and the Wasp, Cassie would have been celebrating her eighth birthday during the film's opening act.
During the events of Avengers: Endgame, Cassie is revealed to be five years older, having survived Thanos's snap in Avengers: Infinity War. This would make her about fifteen years old when she reunited with her father in 2023. Phase 4 of the MCU has been purposely vague about each film and series' timeline following Endgame's five-year time jump, but it is generally believed that about two years have ed since the end of the Infinity Saga, placing the franchise in the year 2025. This suggests that Cassie is about seventeen or eighteen years old during the events of Quantumania, though the film's timeline mistake calls this into question.
There's An Easy Fix For Cassie's Age Breaking The MCU Timeline
Although Marvel's Phase 5 timeline is already messy, the question of Cassie's age is one that is relatively easy for the franchise to fix. Since she was rather young at the time of Yellowjacket's attack in the first Ant-Man film, it would be easy for Cassie to mis her age a decade after the fact. In the midst of an emotional argument with her father, she likely wouldn't stop to make sure that her math was correct before asserting that she was six years old during the event in question. The true point of Cassie's argument, after all, wasn't her exact age but the absurd events permeating her entire life.
Keeping in line with the timeline of the Multiverse Saga, Peyton Reed has confirmed on various occasions that Cassie will indeed be eighteen years old during the events of Quantumania. This s the idea that Cassie was simply mistaken about her age in Ant-Man, as counting the years back from Quantumania would make her eight during the first film's events. However, even if Cassie is simply mistaken, it is still strange that the film's writers included this error at all, knowing that it would only serve to deepen the confusion surrounding the Multiverse Saga's messy timeline, though this is hopefully the only chronological inaccuracy in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
