BioWare continues to drop hints and tidbits about the 2.0 update to less-than-positive reception, BioWare halted the rollout of planned updates and took the game back underground a year after launching with hopes that a major overhaul could save it from complete redundancy. Since then, it's been mostly radio silence, but plans for the game seem to be continuing behind the scenes under the eye of BioWare Austin, who took over from the original team in Edmonton. Players and interested onlookers may be able to see what BioWare has cooking in the not too distant future.
The original version of Anthem has aspirations of living in the same space as online-focused worlds like Bungie's Destiny, but what players finally received after years of hype was anything but comparable. A limited single-player campaign and ho-hum combat dragged down unique sci-fi environments and an undeniably enticing flying mechanic. Worse than a disappointing campaign, the endgame was seemingly still to-be-added when Anthem launched, leaving people who did enjoy themselves nothing to do once they finished what was supposed to be an endless looting and shooting experience.
In a series of tweets over the last couple of weeks, BioWare Austin Studio Director Christian Dailey has been giving his followers brief glimpses into the development of Anthem 2.0. The latest tweet shares that there will be a blog post with further details in the next couple of weeks as well as concept art for a cave area. The tweet makes the area look deceptively small, but zooming in shows what appears to be NPCs that are as small as specs. One might speculate that this is some sort of new story hub, similar to the city of Freemark in the original campaign.
Earlier tweets have included concept art of a pirate faction that would be completely new to the universe, as well as a skull-shaped fortress where they make their home. Considering that one of the major complaints about the original Anthem was its lack of enemy variety, this would be a welcome addition for sure. Digging through Dailey's replies, there's also talk of a refreshed map and radar system, as well as a prototype for a Battlefieled-inspired multiplayer mode in the works. The latter is stated to not be a priority at the moment, but it seems like BioWare's plans are still ambitious for the title.
While it may be surprising to some in the greater industry, there are plenty of fans still pulling for Anthem. Maybe it's the natural love for an underdog story, or the desire to play through a great campaign in Iron Man armor. There are even those who latched onto the original game and loved it despite its faults. For all those folks and more, Anthem 2.0 is on its way, and we can only hope that it pulls a No Man's Sky and impresses everyone.
Anthem is available now for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
