A developer interview has detailed the resolution and frame rate of showing Apex Legends gameplay on the Switch, making fans even more excited for today's launch. While the game's visuals looked very solid, many wondered if its actual live performance would be as impressive.
The Switch version of Apex Legends arrives today, and eager players are curious to see how its performance stacks up against other versions of the game. Though they're always unique, Nintendo consoles have a notorious reputation for being underpowered. Though the Switch is no exception, players are hoping that the game's performance is able to hold its own against Microsoft's and Sony's powerhouse consoles.
Just prior to Apex Legends' Switch release, Respawn and Panic Button held an interview with Japanese-language publication The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. These numbers are a far cry from Apex Legends' resolution on PC, PlayStation 4 Pro, and Xbox One X, where the game can run at up to 4K resolutions and 144fps. PC players also have access to a significant amount of additional graphical options that allow them to increase the game's visual quality at the potential cost of performance.
While the Switch's resolution and frame rate potential may seem embarrassingly inadequate next to that of other consoles and PCs, the truth is that players who want to play Apex Legends at the maximum possible graphical settings will not be using Nintendo's console to do it. It may not be the most beautiful version of the game, but the Switch has the advantage of portability and ease of use, enabling players to play the game anywhere there's a stable internet connection. While the game doesn't split screen co-op, enterprising players can gather and use their Switches in handheld mode together, providing a fun in-person multiplayer experience.
One of Nintendo's goals with the Switch was making a console for everyone, hardcore and casual players alike. Nintendo fans no longer have to buy a high-powered PC or a rival console in order to experience everything that gaming has to offer. While the underpowered nature of their consoles means that big, bombastic third-party titles don't always look as good on the Switch as they do on their PC and other console counterparts, just having major releases on a Nintendo console is already a step forward for Nintendo. Apex Legends fans who are looking to take the game everywhere they go and players looking to experience this battle royale for the first time will be able to do so when the game launches on Nintendo Switch on March 9.
Apex Legends is available on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
