Loot on Saturday Night Live alum Maya Rudolph, and it’s both heartwarming and funny. Some characters are funny without intending to be while others are outright hilarious.
While Molly embarks on her new journey of self-discovery as a single billionaire, the many people she leans on and meets along the way help shape her routine and shift her priorities. And they all provide some laughs along the way.
Hailey
Hailey is not seen often on the show, but her blatant disregard for Molly’s feelings along with her clear immaturity make her inadvertently funny. She is blinded by being infatuated with a tech billionaire who is interested in her, while he likely only sees her as a ing fling.
Her naivety makes fans both laugh at and sympathize with her. Going on television interviews with her boyfriend shortly after revealing to his wife that she was having an affair with him shows a lot of malice. But really, Hailey might simply be in a state of blissful ignorance.
Alex
Alex is the teenage daughter Arthur mentioned in one of the first episodes and fans finally got to meet them in episode four. When Arthur’s ex asked him to take her to her soccer game, he realized he was a four-hour drive away with Molly at a business visit, she graciously offered to take her plane.
Alex’s reaction when she saw her dad pull up on a private plane was priceless along with her endless selfies while in the air and the reaction from her friends on the field who proceeded to take their photos in front of it. It was the typical reaction of a new generation teen that had any parent watching relating to the situation.
Sofia
Sofia might not be the funniest character on the show but she is one of the best characters on Loot. There’s a subtlety to her dialogue that gives her a humorous edge. For example, when Molly asked her if she could actually say no to anything Molly wanted to do at the company, she revealed that she could not but still went ahead with being her usual intimidating self anyway.
One of her funniest moments was when she entered Molly’s home for the second time and hinted at having a hankering for some specific food. The first time, she asked for a delicious chicken pot pie and homemade cherry slurpie. “If I just say the word beignets,” she asked Molly on her second visit, “will some just show up?”
Jacinda
Jacinda is designed to be a parody of every cisgender female socialite who is self-absorbed, cocky, and arrogant. When she asks the waiter at the restaurant to buy out the whole patio so regular people couldn’t sit at a patio nearby, it was so ridiculous, that fans couldn’t help but laugh.
Meanwhile, her generally insincerely, disingenuous demeanor makes her appear like that friend who would only be friends with someone if they belonged to the same social and economic status. Drop a few rungs and she would stop answering calls. Nonetheless, her over-the-top forced smile and pompous behavior make her laughable.
Arthur
Arthur is sweet, likable, and funny. He offers up those corny “dad jokes” but Molly seems to be smitten with them, even if she doesn’t romantically view him, or at least can’t act on any feelings she might be having due to her position at the company. He gets awkward when trying to impress, such as noting what Facebook groups he follows to prove that he is not racist.
He has a subtle charm that makes him funny in a way that makes people around him feel comfortable and at ease. Sometimes, he might be unintentionally funny, too. It’s characters like Arthur that give Loot a good chance of being ranked among the most exciting movies and TV shows new to Apple TV+ in 2022.
Rhonda
Rhonda quickly emerged as one of the funnier employees of the charity when she took her short time to discuss her weekend to talk about how she had a gentleman caller over to “Netflix and Chill” and then reported that they later had intercourse. It was both funny that she wanted to use this modern term while also funny that she didn’t realize “Netflix and Chill” actually does mean having intercourse.
Rhonda is the one employee Sofia and the others have to keep an eye on as she would sometimes do inappropriate things or against company policy, like offering to give Molly a massage to relax her. What fans love about Rhonda is that despite being of mature age, she still knows how to, and does, let loose and have fun.
Marisol And The Staff
Marisol and the staff had their moment in the sun, literally, when Molly gave them a speech to advise that she would be going to work from 9-5 (or later) from now on. Confused with what they should do with their days, Molly simply told them to do “whatever” instead of laying them off or cutting their hours.
After looking at one another for a moment, it was clear that Marisol and the other cooks, cleaners, butlers, and staff, all knew what they should do: have a massive pool party. The scene with them letting their hair down, complete to the soundtrack of “Turn Down For What,” was hilarious.
Nicholas
Nicholas is the perfect person for Molly to have by her side. He knows what she needs and how to make sure she always has a good time. He gets paid to be her confidante and friend, and his disregard for doing things like having a regular 9-5 job are funny.
From spending his workdays catfishing old stepfamily to partying with friends he doesn’t even like (and is clearly jealous of) and his excessive partying ways, fans both find the character funny while also wanting to see him exhibit some growth. He could easily rank among the best TV sitcom sidekicks.
Howard
From the moment Molly met Howard and he revealed himself to be her cousin she couldn’t , fans fell in love with the character who was going to be the one providing comic relief throughout each episode. He explained his job as “taking care of the computers or whatever” in the office.
From his overly sappy interaction with his girlfriend only to puzzlingly reveal to Nicholas that he believed she was angry when their meeting seemed to be quite the opposite, to his calling of Nicholas off hours for advice and his constant reminders to everyone that Molly is his cousin, he is by far one of the funniest on the show.
Molly
Molly is the funniest character on Loot. The scene with her on Hot Ones is one of the funniest of the show as she chugs beer and milk, then mixes the beer and milk in a panic to soothe her burning mouth. Her berating of host Sean Evans, causing him to eventually shut down the episode, had fans in stitches.
Meanwhile, her speech to the women at the shelter along with her completely tone-deaf gift bags for them, and all Molly’s over-the-top extravagances on Loot who also happens to have some of the most ridiculous extravagances on Loot show off her humor, even when she isn’t intending to be funny.
