Warning: contains a preview for Aquaman: The Becoming #1!
Justice League has been murdered. Aquaman: The Becoming #1 has a new preview from DC Comics, showing the destruction and fight that lies ahead of the young hero. The villain responsible hasn't yet been shown, but a name has been revealed: Deluge.
Jackson Hyde, the future Aquaman, was last seen in DC Pride #1. He has also had numerous other appearances, such as the 2020 young adult graphic novel, You Brought Me the Ocean, and Future State: Aquaman. Jackson, currently known as Aqualad, is shown eventually taking up the mantle of Aquaman - a change that may be coming very, very soon.
DC Comics' preview of Aquaman: The Becoming #1 doesn't provide a lot of information about its newest villain, but it does show Aqualad in action. The creative team for this series includes Brandon Thomas, Diego Olortegui, Wade Von Grawbadger, and Adriano Lucas. Thomas wrote Future State: Aquaman, making Aqualad a character that the new DC writer already has experience with. Olortegui has worked on several Marvel titles, as well as Black Hammer Visions, from Dark Horse. This comic seems to be taking another step towards the future that was laid out in DC's Future State event. The first issue of this new Aquaman series releases in September. Check out the preview here:
This preview begins with Aquaman's sidekick has worked towards and earned as a hero. Besides showing Aqualad locked in combat with numerous parademons, this preview also shows a devastating scene.
The second preview page reveals that the Justice League is dead. Superman, Batman, Flash, Hawkgirl, and Black Canary are all visibly shown, lifeless. Green Lantern's ring lays on the ground, powerless and there are some wings sticking out. It appears that Black Canary is laying atop a blue body, her head resting on one of the blue-edged wings, which may be part of Blue Beetle. The only Justice League member still shown alive here is Aquaman (Arthur Curry). The final page shows Jackson being chased by parademons again, as he dives down a gaping hole towards a bright light. Whatever took out the Justice League is a serious threat and it seems likely that Aquaman will need serious help fighting it. This is a tragic base to start from, though the best heroes always seem to rise to victory after suffering the lowest defeat.
Jackson is set to be the new Aquaman, as Arthur raises Andrina Curry, better known as Andy. Arthur's daughter was shown with Future State: Aquaman, after she became Aquawoman. Having supervillain Black Manta as a dad was already hard enough, but now the future Aquaman will face challenges that are bigger than he's ever had before. He will now have to rise from being a longtime sidekick into a full-fledged hero - against all odds. Aqualad will head into the spotlight on September 21, 2021, when the Justice League falls.
