DC's Aquaman for his next adventure, Aquaman: Andromeda. The Black Label imprint is DC Comics' means to publish standalone, often horror-oriented miniseries based around familiar characters. Aquaman's character and story seldom take either a mature or horror route, but Andromeda promises to be a psychological horror.
As per Black Manta goes, sworn enemy, Aquaman isn't far behind, but they both may risk finding themselves swallowed by whatever mysterious abyss await them at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.
Aquaman: Andromeda will be written by Ram V of The Swamp Thing, Venom, and The Many Deaths of Laila Starr fame, with art from Christian Ward who previously worked on Invisible Kingdom and Black Bolt. A release date is currently set for June 7th, 2022.
At face value, for the average reader, Aquaman may sound like an odd character for Black Label to take on for a special limited series run. After all, unlike his Marvel counterpart Namor the Sub-Mariner.
With that said, Aquaman: Andromeda taking a horror approach is more of a blessing than a curse. It freshens up a character who has existed for more than 80 years by placing him in a brand new genre. Aquaman has been in the ocean for more than 80 years, but he has never been reimagined in a vastly different genre. Re-contextualizing Aquaman's native underwater base as an understandably scary landscape has massive potential that Arthur Curry fans should be excited to see in action.
Ram V and Christian Ward's Aquaman: Andromeda, DC Comics' latest Black Label release, will be released in digital and local comic book stores on June 7th, 2022.
