The Justice League is directed by notable horror filmmaker James Wan and stars Jason Momoa as the eponymous character. Although Aquaman is not an origin story in the traditional sense, it does serve as an introduction to the character's world, specifically his underwater kingdom - and it expands upon the story that first started in Justice League.

Up until this point, Momoa's Arthur Curry hasn't been the traditional comic book character that people might have initially expected. That's because he's not portraying the comic version of the character... yet. When audiences first meet Arthur in Justice League, he's not the King of Atlantis, but rather someone who feels displaced in both worlds - the surface and underwater worlds. It looks like him finding a place among his fellow Atlanteans is a major part of his solo movie's story, and he requires a special object for him to do so.

In a set visit report from searching for King Atlan's Trident with the help of Amber Heard's Mera, all while the pair are being pursued by Patrick Wilson's Orm, aka Ocean Master, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II's David Hyde, aka Black Manta. They embark on this quest after uncovering a hidden message from King Atlan, aka the Dead King, from an artifact, saying, "The time has come to on my legacy ... If you seek my power, you must prove your worth."

King Atlan was one of the first rulers of Atlantis, and in the comics, he is credited with expanding Atlantis' rule over the seven underwater kingdoms. Years ago, the first poster revealing Momoa's Aquaman had the tagline, "Unite the Seven." At the time, it was presumed that it was an indication of Aquaman uniting the core seven Justice League , but that didn't end up being the case, especially since there are only six Justice League right now. However, a recent image from the Aquaman movie revealed that the tagline may have, in fact, been referring to the seven underwater kingdoms.

Momoa has previously said that Aquaman won't actually he's the current King of Atlantis. The Aquaman movie is truly shaping up to be an underwater adventure story that also has a focus on family.
