The identity of the real Agent Argylle is the biggest mystery with Argylle, and the movie delivers several twists before confirming their identity and teasing the future. Matthew Vaughn's 2024 action spy movie was largely built around the question of who Agent Argylle really is. This was due to the story revolving around author Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard) who wrote fictional novels about an Agent Argylle (played by Henry Cavill) and her discovery that her books were veering too close to reality. Everything from the marketing to the movie itself begged the question of Argylle's true identity.

By the time watches Argylle in theaters or on streaming. This is driven by the fact that the movie confirms Elly Conway was a spy named Rachel Kylle who worked for The Division. However, the truth about the movie's titular spy is more complicated than that single reveal, as the story keeps evolving until the closing moments.

Elly Conway Is The Real Agent Argylle (Kind Of)

As the main plot unfolds, it appears as though Elly Conway is the real Agent Argylle. Her real name is Rachel Kylle, and she spent years working as an agent for The Division. Since abbreviating her name to R. Kylle makes it sound just like Argylle, the inspiration for the Argylle books she writes becomes more clear. It is only after Rachel gets amnesia and is brainwashed that she forgets about her spy past and takes on the author persona, which allows her to unknowingly tell the true stories of her past.

All signs seem to point to Elly Conway/Rachel Kylle being the answer to Argylle's big twist. Agent Argylle's book adventures actually belong to Rachel Kylle, and she even sees hallucinations of the fictional Argylle as a manifestation of herself. However, a final revelation indicates Elly Conway is not the real Agent Argylle. Her spy missions might be the basis for the book version of Argylle and her name might sound similar, but the movie ultimately reveals that there is a living, breathing, and very real agent named Argylle as well.

Henry Cavill Plays The Real Agent Argylle (With A Twist)

Henry Cavill plays Argylle for the entirety of the movie's runtime, even though he is technically playing the fictional book version and a stand-in for Rachel. Instead of Cavill's Argylle role being a total spy fakeout, the very end of the movie seems to have him play the real Agent Argylle. The presence of this new Argylle is revealed when he visits Elly Conway at a book g. He tells Elly that she must have questions for him. It is through this scene that Argylle teases Henry Cavill will also play this new Agent Argylle for any potential future appearances.

Since Cavill already played the fictional version of Argylle, the movie delivers a final surprise to help audiences differentiate between the fake and real versions of the spy. This meant changing Henry Cavill's Argylle hair, which was already a topic of conversation. The real Agent Argylle has a mullet and a different accent, making him look and sound different from the fictional version imagined in Elly Conway's books and imagination. There is always a chance that this look will not stick, as this presumed real Argylle could be wearing it as a disguise.

The confirmation that an actual Agent Argylle exists in the real world and has now met Elly Conway raises more questions. If his actual backstory is in anyway similar to what Elly's books established for Argylle's origin, that could mean that she already knows this person and incorporated his past into her stories. Since she had amnesia for five years, she might not have ed his existence until seeing him again jogs her memory. Telling Elly that she must have questions for him implies they might not know each other but that his life is eerily similar to her books.

Kingsman Is Connected To Agent Argylle's Backstory

Further differences between the fictional and real Agent Argylle become clear through Argylle's post-credits scene's Kingsman crossover. The mid-credits scene shows a younger version of the real Aubrey Argylle, played by Louis Partridge, as he goes to The King's Man bar. This sequence is enough to confirm that the Kingsman organization had some role to play in the real Argylle's backstory. He picks up a gun from the location, which appears to be the start of his life as a spy 20 years before the events of Argylle. How else Kingsman and Argylle could be connected remains a mystery.

There are a ton of parallels between the spy worlds of Argylle and Kingsman, but there are two big problems with connecting the two universes.

Argylle's Origin Will Be Explored In A Prequel

The full extent of Argylle's origin and backstory are expected to be explored in an prequel series. It was announced that Matthew Vaughn is developing an Argylle prequel. Casting Partridge as the young Argylle for the mid-credits scene implies that he will play a bigger role, leaving Cavill's presence uncertain. Since the credits scene ended by teasing an adaptation of Conway's first Argylle book is on the way, it would seem as though the next movie will fully flesh out the past of the real mysterious agent.

The Argylle prequel does not yet have a release date and has yet to be officially green-lit.

Who Does Agent Argylle Work For?

One part of Agent Argylle's spy career that is unclear in the movie is who he works for. In the real book published by the real Elly Conway, Agent Argylle is recruited by the CIA. However, Argylle never confirms that Argylle works for the Central Intelligence Agency. The best indication likely comes from Argylle's mid-credits scene and the inclusion of the Kingsman connection. It is now possible that the real Agent Argylle is actually a Kingsman agent instead of working for the CIA or even The Division. However, it is much simpler to explain Argylle working for another organization.

The potential problem with Agent Argylle working for the Kingsman comes with how that fits into the overall shared universe. Kingsman agents have code names taken from Arthurian legends, such as Merlin, Galahad, and Lancelot. Argylle would not traditionally go by his real name then. It would also create questions about why an agent of Argylle's abilities was not featured in any previous Kingsman movies, why he does not have their usual appearance, and why he did not die in Kingsman: The Golden Circle. This would all need to be explained to make sense of Argylle being a Kingsman agent.

Will Henry Cavill Return As The Real Agent Argylle?

Thanks to Argylle's final reveal that Henry Cavill also plays the real Agent Argylle, the odds are favorable that he will return again. Yet, there are no confirmed plans for Henry Cavill to return as Argylle in any projects. The easiest way that this will change is if plans for Argylle 2 move forward. The movie's ending directly sets up how the real Agent Argylle and Rachel Kylle could team up for future adventures. Furthermore, Matthew Vaughn has plans for an entire Argylle trilogy, so it would make sense for the real spy to be heavily involved.

Argylle's trilogy plan is dependent on how well the movie performs at the box office.

The other option for Henry Cavill's Agent Argylle to return is Kingsman 3. Now that the two franchises take place in the same universe and some history between Argylle and Kingsman has been established, it would be quite easy to make this happen. It is unclear if Kingsman 3 will happen before or after Argylle 2 at this point. If it happens after, then Argylle 2 could set up Cavill's appearance in Kingsman 3. Either way, it is safe to believe that Argylle is just the beginning of Henry Cavill's time playing the real Agent Argylle.
