Zack Snyder's continuation of Snyder's DCEU plans, the director has moved onto another franchise. Army of the Dead, Snyder's first Netflix film, arrived back in May with the promise of shepherding in a new kind of zombie series for the streamer. Though critics were a bit more divided on the film, fans have largely praised Army of the Dead and Snyder's fresh take on the zombie apocalypse.
After a colorful opening recounting how a zombie outbreak began in Las Vegas, Army of the Dead picks up with mercenary Scott Ward (Dave Bautista), who is soon tasked with a job: Venture into the quarantine zone and retrieve the $200 million left underneath a casino. Scott enlists a motely crew to pull off the heist, and what follows is a wild and violent adventure through a zombie-filled city. From alpha zombies to undead animals, Army of the Dead introduced a lot of intriguing new concepts.
Netflix is often hesitant to release viewing figures, but the streamer did unveil its updated list of top 10 most-watched original movies (via Fandango's Erik Davis). Within its first 28 days of being available, Army of the Dead scored 75 million viewers. This puts it in a tie at eighth and ninth place with last year's Project Power. The top original movie continues to be the Chris Hemsworth-starring Extraction with 99 million views. The full list can be seen below.

Within its first week, Netflix announced Army of the Dead was on track to be one of its most-watched movies ever. Clearly, that projection has held firm, with Snyder's movie stacking up alongside fellow major releases The Old Guard and Bird Box. This bodes well for all the follow-up projects Netflix has on the pipeline, including prequel movie Army of Thieves and animated series Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas.
Undoubtedly, Snyder's popularity as a director helped fuel these numbers. Though his projects aren't for everyone, he remains one of the most debated and discussed directors in recent memory, and his unique take on zombies left much to pore over. His fans might want him to return to DC, but it certainly looks like Snyder is more suited to hang around Netflix for the time being. Luckily, he has Rebel Moon in the works at the streamer, so there's more to be excited about. Perhaps that project might even end up topping Army of the Dead. That would certainly be an interesting turn of events.
