Actor Danny DeVito tricked Arnold Schwarzenegger into getting high while filming the 1994 Terminator 2: Judgement Day, but his ability to entertain audiences has never diminished, regardless of genre.

While he may have already been a worldwide action star, as the 90s progressed, it became clear that Schwarzenegger was interested in pushing his career beyond his usual fare. He began to take roles that few would have expected him to, experimenting more with comedy in particular. This interest in the comedic genre was undoubtedly encouraged by the success Schwarzenegger had previously found with 1988’s reportedly starring Schwarzenegger, DeVito, and Tracy Morgan.

Trying to recreate the success they had working together on Twins, DeVito and Schwarzenegger reunited in 1994 alongside director Ivan Reitman for Junior. The film told the story of a scientist (Schwarzenegger) who agrees to take on an experimental treatment in which he’s impregnated. It wasn’t anywhere near the hit that Twins was, but as Schwarzenegger recently explained on Jimmy Kimmel Live, there was plenty of fun to be had while making the film, and DeVito even took the opportunity to trick Schwarzenegger into getting high. As Schwarzenegger explained:

“There was one time when I was shooting Junior, I and it was lunch break. And Danny said to me, he says, 'Come to my trailer, I cook some good Italian food.' And I said okay, so I went to the trailer, we ate the Italian food, it was delicious... Then afterwards he says 'Arnold you always give me cigars and I always feel guilty. I have cigars this time, I want to give you a cigar.' And then I said 'Well that’s - finally, I said, Danny, this is really great.'

He gives me this cigar, a really long one, beautiful cigar – Montecristo, Aniversario. And then so, I put it in my mouth and light it up and he just comes to me with the lighter and we light it up and I’m smoking it and it was fantastic. We get to the set, we continue on with the scene, I forgot my lines. I’m standing in front of the camera, it was a close up of me, Danny’s behind the camera and the director says 'action' – Ivan Reitman – and I said, 'um… What am I supposed to say?'

'Well, we [continuing] on with the scene, Arnold, from before lunch, the scene when you and Danny were talking about going out and you’re now pregnant and all of these kinds of things?' And so I said, 'No, I don’t ,' I said 'What did we do before lunch?' And so I had to go to the script supervisor, I had to check out the script, I totally forgot everything. Find out then an hour and a half later when I finally started ing things again that Danny put some marijuana in the front of the cigar.”

It seems that Schwarzenegger and DeVito certainly have a mischievous relationship. The former California governor then went on to tell a story about trying to do the same thing to DeVito. Unfortunately for the Terminator, it didn’t work as well. DeVito immediately sniffed out the weed in the cigar that Schwarzenegger had offered him.

Hopefully, this fun-loving sensibility that the two actors share is still alive. The Twins sequel - reportedly titled Triplets - seems to be getting closer and closer to becoming a reality and that sort of camaraderie shows on camera. It’s been a while since the stars have shared a screen together, but judging by Arnold past experiences with DeVito, the two know how to have fun, and that is often the first key factor in making a film great.
