The trailer for Ash hints at several mysteries to uncover. Riya seemingly wakes up with no memory of how her crew has been killed or why the space station is in the state that it’s in, and she doesn’t even sending out a distress call or who she is. When Paul’s Brion comes in like a knight in shining armor, Riya attacks him. Based on Brion’s reaction, she should him. Ash so far looks like a sci-fi survival thriller/mystery, with Riya and Brion’s partnership and the mystery they have to solve at the core. The planet itself and the otherworldly phenomena that occur are also filled with enigma, including a shot of Riya outside the station, looking at some kind of blue phenomenon that seems to be collapsing into itself like a dying star, surrounded by a pink night sky. All the sci-fi elements presented and the flashing images of violence and horror heavily hint at a sci-fi mystery/thriller with twists and a unique setting.

Our Take On The Ash Trailer

The Story Feels Familiar, But The World-Building Feels Fresh

A green-tinted Eiza González looks down at something in horror in Ash

The tropes of a dead crew, a lone survivor, a mysterious savior, and sudden amnesia have all been harped on, but Ash seems to be promising a creative take on the familiar. Personally, the planet and its mysterious phenomena were enough to intrigue me, along with the ambiguity surrounding Paul’s character. Based on the trailer, it looks like Ash has creative interpretations of key elements of sci-fi, but whether its narrative is compelling enough to stand out from what has come before remains to be seen.
