Recent last Assassin's Creed trilogy, composed of Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla, all set in the distant past in regions with rich, recognizable mythologies. The new trio saw considerably better reception than the preceding trio despite representing a more drastic transition from the established Assassin's Creed formula, and fans generally enjoyed the mythological battles. If Assassin's Creed Hexe features monsters as well, they could create an effective horror atmosphere in the project.
The series' lore, which has become nonsensical enough to allow just about anything, uses its ancient race of superhuman beings called Isu to explain the presence of fantastical monsters in its previously grounded universe. Humans interpreted Assassin's Creed's Isu to be the "gods" which make up various pantheons, while monsters are Isu experiments gone awry. The flexibility of this pseudo-scientific logic allows Ubisoft to add whatever monsters it wants, and to its credit, many of its creatures feel genuinely scary and powerful.
The setting of Assassin's Creed Hexe is not confirmed, but the fan theory that the game will be set in during the 16th Century Witch Trials has been gaining ground. The unexpectedly spooky featured in the next Assassin's Creed game adopt her fight mechanics and have an added stealth component, they could be genuinely horrifying for players.
Assassin's Creed's Monsters Would Be Perfect In Hexe If They Were Stealthier
The series has also featured werewolf-like monsters in Valhalla, and werewolves have enough association with Germanic folklore to make good enemies in Hexe. Valhalla's "Puca" look scary enough and have an effectively threatening style of rapid, ruthless attacks, but a change of setting and behavior could make them truly spooky. If Hexe features similar werewolves, they should stalk players in dark forests, creating tension before surprising their prey. Creatures like wights and trolls could play similar roles and make Hexe's woods incredibly creepy.
Large AC monsters in Odyssey like cyclops and minotaurs make terrifying tank enemies and provide a strong foundation for similar creatures in Hexe, while the many Norse myth characters in AC Valhalla prove magic can fit well into the series' combat. Origins' boss fight against the massive serpent monster Apep is particularly disturbing since the player is confined to a boat and must survive against a creature that moves through both water and land. Hexe could easily work undead monsters like zombies in as well, and previous creatures like Origins' undead pharaohs prove the franchise can handle the concept well. Assassin's Creed has featured plenty of terrifying monsters so far, and if Hexe's monsters have more stealth and stalker elements, they could create a true horror experience.
