Where in the world will Ubisoft be taking its best-selling Assassin's Creed series should be due out in 2022.
Traditionally, Assassin’s Creed games take place in richly storied locations that are full of history, lore, and political depth. So far, the series has taken audiences everywhere from ancient Egypt to colonial America to the Caribbean. Players love to learn about new cultures while being immersed in both big cities and the wilds of the natural world.
Fortunately, there are plenty of possible settings for the next Assassin’s Creed game that would fit those parameters perfectly. Here are some locations that would be great to see.
Next Assassin's Creed Location: Mesoamerica
Because the pre-Hispanic peoples of Central and South America left little in the way of written records, much of early Mesoamerican life remains a mystery - but what is known is extremely compelling. It’s easy to imagine exploring places like Chichen Itza and the walled city of Tulum as they must’ve looked in the 11th century. Mythology could be woven into the game in the same way significance of 2012 in the Mayan calendar could make fascinating additions, as well.
Next Assassin's Creed Location: Polynesia
For audiences that enjoy the sailing components of Assassin’s Creed games, a Polynesian setting is a dream come true. The story might take place in the 9th or 10th century with players sailing as a wayfinder, navigating by the stars to discover new islands on the maps, and then interacting with the peoples and cultures they find there. Polynesian lore could be explored more deeply, with audiences getting to know Maui as more than a big singing softie.
Next Assassin's Creed Location: Ireland
Fionn mac Cumhaill, the hunter. The fairy-like aes sídhe. The land of Tír na nÓg. The mythology of ancient Ireland is so full of engrossing people and places that it’s difficult to believe Ubisoft hasn’t already done an Assassin’s Creed game set in Eire.
The area’s megaliths are a perfect place on which to center various quests, and while the 5th century BCE Celtic invasion into Ireland is debated by historians, it could provide a compelling scenario for an Assassin's Creed game.
Next Assassin's Creed Location: India
Because it's home to one of the world’s oldest civilizations, India is an ideal setting for an Assassin’s Creed game. Players might encounter Mahāvīra, the mathematician, in southern India in the 9th century. They might visit the 5th century Gupta Empire during the Golden Age of India. They might even take on a quest to hunt down the rainbow fish, the giant fish of legend that swallowed Buddha. With a land that vast and a history that deep, an Assassin’s Creed game set in India would be limited only by the imagination of the developers.
Next Assassin's Creed Location: Russia
The mysteries surrounding Grigori Rasputin and the Romanov family make imperial Russia an absolutely perfect setting for an Assassin’s Creed game. This time period has it all - social upheaval, political intrigue, perhaps even supernatural elements. Imagine the story possibilities if Anastasia Romanov were to be a main character or even the player’s protagonist. Did she disappear? Or did she escape to the centuries-old battle between the Assassins and the Templars? Hopefully Ubisoft will let fans find out in an Assassin’s Creed title.
