Allies are characters in Assassin's Creed Shadows who you can summon to your side in battle or recruit to disrupt enemies and make combat easier. Each ally offers something unique to help you take out your foes, from powerful warriors to stealthy ninjas. Sporting active and ive abilities you can call upon, all the allies in the game are worth befriending as you continue your journey.

Some allies can only be recruited depending on your choices, making some easy to miss as your decisions lock them away forever. Some characters you recruit even act as romance options in Assassin's Creed Shadows if you take the time to grow closer to them. Your actions determine whether certain allies will you, so be careful not to alienate potential additions to your team.

How To Recruit Every Ally In Assassin's Creed Shadows

Get Everyone On Your Side

You can recruit six possible allies in total, aside from the non-combat characters who can you at your Dojo. Any ally you convince to you shows up at your Dojo, an area where you can swap out which character is ing you while you go out into the world.

As you upgrade your Dojo in Assassin's Creed Shadows, you'll eventually be able to use multiple allies in battle rather than just one. For example, by enhancing your Dojo to Level 2, you'll gain the ability to use two allies instead of one.

Allies can be trained to help them grow stronger, changing their abilities to become better over time. However, some allies won't you if you make the wrong choices, so you may lose out on any opportunities to train potential companions. Whenever a dialogue option has a warning saying how it will impact a character, the decision you make will likely determine whether that person will want to you as an ally.

How To Recruit Yaya

Assassin's Creed Shadows Yaya ally from Dojo

One of the first allies you can recruit is Yaya, who appears during the Shinbakufu quest to hunt down The Wounded. During "The Fatherless Monk" quest, you will reach the end of the mission where you have to make an important choice regarding the fate of your defeated target. Killing and sparing people in AC Shadows is a common decision in the game, but this time, Yaya will be closely watching to see what option you pick.

Choose the "Killing isn't justice" dialogue option during The Wounded quest to earn Yaya's approval, which unlocks her unique questline. This mission, called "The Stray Dogs," also puts your morality to the test, questioning your mercy toward others. To recruit Yaya fully to your Dojo, pick these options:

  • "We forgive him"
  • "You need to forgive each other"
  • "Let's work together"

How To Recruit Gennojo

Assassin's Creed Shadows Gennojo ally recruited into Dojo

Gennojo can be recruited as you go after The Fool, another major target. During the "Missing Missive" quest, you actually fight Gennojo at first, then choose to spare him to start pursuing the character's storyline. Follow Gennojo's questline to recruit him, but only when playing as Naoe to unlock all the necessary dialogue options needed to recruit him.

Those trying to romance Gennojo in Assassin's Creed Shadows will have to recruit the character first, so following Gennojo's quests can serve two goals at once.

You must complete the following quests as Naoe to be on the right path to recruit Gennojo:

  • "Lost Honor"
  • "Sake and Sword"
  • "Honor Among Thieves"
  • "Stolen Hearts"
  • "The Godless Harvest"

During the final quest, you have to prevent Gennojo from using explosives by choosing the option to soothe him rather than stop him. This opens up the choice to say "We make a good team" at the end of the mission, which officially adds Gennojo to your Dojo.

How To Recruit Ibuki

Assassin's Creed Shadows Ibuki ally standing in the Dojo roster.

Similar to Gennojo, you must play as Yasuke to recruit Ibuki as you pursue the character's quests. You can find Ibuki in Iga near Kashiwara Village by pursuing the "Ambush Interrupted" side quest that pops up in that area. When you finish the fighting in that mission, you can speak to Ibuki and choose the "I have changed" dialogue option to open up the character's questline.

If you are just starting out in Assassin's Creed Shadows and need to know what skills to go for first, here are our suggestions for the ones to grab.

Complete Ibuki's quest, "Homecoming," to continue recruiting them to your side. Near the end of the quest, you can choose to have Ibuki fight alongside you against the mission's final boss, which officially recruits the character. All you have to do is make sure Ibuki is not defeated in battle to ensure that the character becomes available as an ally in your Dojo.

How To Recruit Oni-Yuri

Assassin's Creed Shadows Oni-Yuri ally character standing in Dojo roster.

When you reach Act 2 of the game's story, you can travel north to Wakasa to search for the mysterious Oni-Yuri, another potential ally. This character exists far to the north of your map, making her hard to track down compared to other allies. However, once you find her, all you need to do is complete her unique quests to recruit her to your Dojo.

Find Oni-Yuri at Tsuruga Castle near Sotomo Gate, then interact with her more to begin the character's quests. Go through these quests from start to finish continuing on the path to recruiting Oni-Yuri:

  • "Sweet Lies"
  • "Sweet Revenge"

Thankfully, there are no dialogue options that impact Oni-Yuri during both of these quests until the end of the second mission. At the very end of her questlines, you can simply recruit Oni-Yuri by picking the "I will show you" prompt that shows up.

How To Recruit Katsuhime

Assassin's Creed Shadows Katsuhime ally character in Dojo roster

Katsuhime is a character you can recruit during the main Shinbakufu questline as you hunt down The Naginata target. During the "Showdown in Sakamoto" quest, you arrive in Omi, encountering Katsuhime in a tense confrontation. Do not antagonize Katsuhime as you need her help to complete the "Requiem for Rokkaku" mission that unlocks the character's unique questline later.

How To Romance Katsuhime In Assassin's Creed Shadows

Out of Naoe's romancing options, Kathshuime takes the longest to connect with across 5 quests, but is still easy to do in Assassin's Creed Shadow.

Once you unlock Katsuhime's quests, play only as Naoe to recruit the character. This first ally mission, "Letter from Katsuhime," will take you to The Shimmering Fields area southeast of Sakamoto, where you can speak to Katsuhime some more. Finish both of these quests to gain a dialogue option that allows you to finally recruit Katsuhime to your Dojo:

  • "Letter from Katsuhime"
  • "The Diary of Lady Rokkaku"

The last mission takes place at Ado River Valley, where you help Katsuhime retrieve her mentor's weapon. This quest will see you rescue Katsuhime and ask her to you once you defeat all of the enemies who've captured the character.

How To Recruit Yagoro

Assassins' Creed Shadows Yagoro ally character selected in Dojo roster.

The final ally character you can recruit is Yagoro, but you can't recruit this character until all Shinbakufu are dead. This makes the character a very late addition to your roster, but a worthy one nonetheless. When you meet the right requirements, head to Harima to start "A Blade in the Dark," a mission tied to tracking down a mysterious shinobi killer.

Similar to Gennojo, you have to defeat Yagoro in battle during this quest. Once you've done so, you have to assassinate a samurai target inside Mitsunodo Hall to earn Yagoro's respect. From my experience, you don't have to pick any dialogue options here, as Yagoro will your Dojo after some brief conversation that takes place when you kill the samurai target.

Once you gain any ally, they become available in your Dojo to swap at any time. When you learn how to recruit them, all the allies in Assassin's Creed Shadows are quite powerful to use for stealth or battle, especially as you train them to grow even stronger.
