A new fan theory suggests the next Assassin's Creed Odyssey, some are already questioning where the historical action-adventure series will go next.
Since 2007, gamers have got to grips with everything from the Italian Renaissance to the French Revolution, Egyptian civilization to Victorian London. Even with 10 titles already under the main series' belt and the 11th already on the way, the time-hopping name of Assassin's Creed is a long way off from running out of ideas. Considering the series already alluded to Japan thanks to Clay Kaczmarek cryptically writing "Yonaguni" before his death, Ubisoft might finally be ready to tie everything together with a neat bow.

Hiding at the start of Assassin's Creed III, eagle-eyed Redditor DoktahManhattan spotted a clue for where Ubisoft could be heading next. Although the 2012 game was set in the Colonial Era, three symbols appeared in the opening and teased the future of the franchise. Pictured below, the first is the Eye of Horus (Assasin's Creed Origins), followed by the Greek letter Omega (Assassin's Creed Odyssey), and a final symbol that looks like a torii - a gate seen near sacred Japanese sites. Although there is no direct confirmation that an Odyssey followup has set its sights on Japan, the order of the symbols has got everyone thinking.
It is interesting to note that back in 2012, then Ubisoft creative director Alex Hutchinson told Official Xbox Magazine that Egypt, Japan, and World War II are the most frequently suggested locations, but all ones that he branded "boring." Flash forward to 2018 and Ubisoft has already given gamers a trip to the pyramids of Egypt, so does this mean Japan is on its way too?
Assassin's Creed had mixed success with Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China back in 2015, meaning a return to the Orient could help redeem this uncharted corner of the franchise's world. Only recently, HBO's TV series Westworld took a trip to Shogunworld with its ambitious season 2 and reminded everyone why this period of history has so much potential for a bloodthirsty brawl. While there might be fears that a Samurai-set Assassin's Creed might pale in comparison to the recent hype surrounding Ghost of Tsushima, let's that war games like Call of Duty and Battlefield have no problems going head-to-head. Also, considering that Ubisoft hasn't announced what comes after Odyssey, time is on the company's side.
Japan is a setting that pops up time and time again for dream Assassin's Creed games and it is surely only a matter of time before developers give fans what they want. Ultimately, there is still Assassin's Creed Odyssey to get out of the way first, but players should keep their eyes peeled for Assassin's Creed Shogun to be announced.
