Anime prequel series are becoming increasingly common, with a few prequel spin-offs on the way in 2025, including My Hero Academia: Vigilantes. Prequels can be incredibly helpful and increase fans' appreciation of the original franchise by shedding light on mysteries that were previously only hinted at in the main series.
So many beloved anime series are worthy of receiving a prequel, but there is one story that deserves a spin-off more than any other: Attack on Titan. Attack on Titan's plot is extremely complex and detailed, and even by the end of the anime and manga, not every fan question had the chance to be answered. A prequel would certainly shed more light on the history of the Titans, the Founder Ymir Fritz's backstory, and other crucial elements of the series' story.
A Prequel Could Explore Ymir’s Life and How Titans Were Created
Some of the Biggest Conflicts in Attack on Titan Occurred Before Eren Was Even Born
The Titans were not a new phenomenon in Attack on Titan. The terrifying creatures had been in existence for 2,000 years at the time of Eren's story in the main series. Millions of other humans fought, fled from, and were killed by the beings throughout history, so a prequel could potentially elaborate on the experiences and encounters other people had with the Titans, as well as the growing tension between the Eldians and the rest of the world that led to the Eldians becoming exiled to Paradis Island. Attack on Titan may be action-packed, but a lot of the crucial conflict happened before Eren was ever born.

Another important element that could be elaborated on in a sequel is the story of Ymir Fritz, the first person to use Titan powers. Ymir's backstory is heart-wrenching and contains some of the most nauseatingly brutal scenes in Attack on Titan. She developed Titan powers by accident and was subsequently kidnapped by King Fritz so he could manipulate these skills for his own benefit. Ymir's life was miserable and filled with suffering, and once she died, the cruel king did not even show her the respect of letting her body rest in peace.
A Prequel Would Allow More Time for Exploring Attack on Titan’s Tragic History
Attack on Titan Is Filled With Mysteries Even After the Finale, and a Prequel Could Explain Some of These
After Ymir died, King Fritz forced their daughters to consume Ymir's body to inherit her powers, and that is how the Titan curse and spread of Titan shifting powers continued for centuries. These details are all explained in Attack on Titan's manga and anime, but this pivotal history is only briefly visited through flashbacks in the story. A prequel manga would offer the chance to dive deeper into Ymir's sorrowful life, how she became the Founding Titan, and how Ymir's powers kicked off a centuries-long curse that continued plaguing humanity all the way until Eren's birth thousands of years later.

10 Best Attack On Titan Characters who Deserve Their Own Spinoff
Attack on Titan is a massive series with incredible set-pieces, amazing fights, and amazing side characters who deserve their own spinoffs
These are just a few potential topics an Attack on Titan sequel could focus on, but the possibilities are truly endless. Few anime series have as much well-thought-out lore as Attack on Titan does, and many of these plot points deserve more explanation. A lot of the history pre-Eren is not revealed until seasons three and four of the anime, almost at the conclusion of the series. Since a lot of these shocking revelations came so late in the series, there was not enough time for Attack on Titan to cover every topic it needed to, making a prequel even more necessary.
