Wit Studios Missed Out Big Time
A recent interview with George Wada explains why VInland Saga and Attack on Titan went to MAPPA
George Wada explained that the studio always picks up a project with the intent of seeing it through, but circumstances got in the way when it came to Attack On Titan and Vinland Saga. Wit Studios was initially contracted to animate the first season, and then, based on the DVD sales, a decision would be made about whether a second season could be made. Unfortunately, the sales weren't available until later on, and Wada had to schedule other anime for the studio. He also takes responsibility for the studio having to drop the series.
Attack On Titan and Vinland Saga were both picked up by MAPPA, a studio much bigger than Wit, and had more resources to wait until the sales data became available. Fortunately, DVD and Blu-ray sales are no longer considered, since streaming has become the most common method of watching anime. This has led to faster announcements of anime that weren't possible a few years ago. Another factor that might've played a role in their dropping of Attack On Titan specifically was how small the studio was at the time. With it being their first anime and having only 35 employees, the workload was so excessive that the second season aired 4 years after the first.

Chainsaw Man Anime Studio Already Busted a Big Myth About the Series

Wit Studio has grown a lot over the years and has become an animation powerhouse. Despite losing two of their early success stories, they are doing well for themselves with Spy X Family, Suicide Squad Isekai and the recently announced One Piece remake. Known for their faithful adaptations and high quality work, the sky is the limit for Wit Studios as they continue to entertain anime fans for years to come.
