Aang and Katara's, spanned the entire series, progressing slowly so that the character dynamics didn't get awkward throughout the show. Others, like the relationship between Zuko and Mai, were introduced later in the series, but were packed with drama in order to give fans an incentive to get so invested in the relationship and the conflicts that were present within it.

One relationship that falls in between, that felt more natural than many others in this franchise, was that between Sokka and Suki. To this day, many fans want more of this warrior couple, but before they can hope to receive more, there are a few things about Sokka and Suki's relationship that they should already be well aware of.

Their Relationship Officially Began After They Crossed The Serpent's

Sokka and Suki's First Kiss, Avatar

Sokka and Suki first met on Kyoshi Island in Avatar: The Last Airbender's fourth episode entitled "The Warriors of Kyoshi", in which Suki gave Sokka a little kiss on the cheek after he apologized for treating her like a girl and not a warrior. But this wasn't enough to tie Sokka down. That's why he felt free to pursue a romance with Princess Yue in the Northern Water Tribe.

It wasn't until Book 2, after they crossed the Serpent's , where they officially began their relationship after Sokka allowed himself to move on.

Their Relationship Isn't Mentioned At All In The Legend Of Korra

Sokka in Avatar The Last Airbender

The Legend of Korra touched on the fates of many beloved characters from Avatar: The Last Airbender, giving fans a better idea of what their lives were like long after the Hundred Year War had ended. While Sokka was shown in a brief flashback, not much about him was mentioned after that, leaving fans to wonder where he lived, if he had any kids, and more importantly, if his romance with Suki lasted.

Suki doesn't appear in flashbacks at all, and she isn't even mentioned in The Legend of Korra, leaving fans to come up with their own theories concerning whether or not her romance with Sokka lasted.

Their Relationship Wasn't Originally Intended

Apparently, Suki was supposed to be one of those characters in Avatar to just appear in one episode. According to the book "Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Art of the Animated Series", Suki was brought back due to her popularity among staff and fans.

This means that originally, the creators didn't intend for the two to have a romance, but since Suki became a recurring character, she was the perfect candidate for his long-term girlfriend in the series.

Sokka The Copycat...

Sokka and Suki Surprising One Another

When Suki was first introduced, she was only ever shown in her Kyoshi Warrior garb, face paint and all. When she first appeared without her makeup, encountering Team Avatar at Full Moon Bay, Sokka had trouble recognizing her, until she gave him a little peck on the cheek. Fast-forward to Book 3, and Sokka tried the same thing with Suki after he found out where she was being held at Boiling Rock.

He entered her room, dressed as a guard, and gave her the same spiel about her not recognizing him before trying to give her a kiss to jog her memory. While he didn't intend to be punched by his own girlfriend, he gets points for flipping the script and using her own rouse against her in an unforgettable callback to the earliest days of their relationship.

Sokka Never Told Suki The Whole Story About Yue

Avatar: The Last Airbender gives fans a prime example as to why people never tell their partners about their exes. Fans learned that Sokka never told Suki the full story about Yue during the Book 3 episode "The Ember Island Players".

While watching the play, there was a scene that depicted Yue turning into the moon after kissing Sokka, to which Suki remarked that Sokka had never told her that he made out with the Moon Spirit. Sokka, overcome with emotion, didn't hesitate to shush her, and the look on Suki's face afterwards definitely didn't make Sokka someone to envy.

They Went To A Seashell Store Together After The War

After the Hundred Year War, Suki and Sokka's relationship continued. At one point in the Avatar graphic novels, they stopped by Seashell San's House of Shells in the Fire Nation, where Suki (as well as many fans) first became aware of her boyfriend's adoration of seashells.

Given that they weren't relatively dating for too long, it makes sense that the two were still discovering things about one another up until the very end of the graphic novels.

They Still Spent Much Time Apart After The Hundred Year War

Even after the Hundred Year War, Team Avatar got pulled in many different directions. Suki and the other Kyoshi Warriors spent a fair amount of time serving as bodyguards for Fire Lord Zuko. Sokka, on the other hand, had his hands full helping Aang and Katara with the Harmony Restoration Movement that took him all around the Earth Kingdom.

This means that unlike Aang and Katara, Sokka still had to go for long periods without seeing his girlfriend, although he seemed to handle the separation well, prompting him to make the most use out of the time in which they were together.

Sokka Still Dates The Moon?

Sokka Refuses to Kiss Suki In Front of the Moon

Princess Yue was given her name due to it meaning "moon" in Chinese, since her life was saved by the Moon Spirit when she was just an infant. Most fans may not know that Suki's name is similar to the Japanese word "tsuki", which also means moon.

Though Suki doesn't have a spiritual connection to the Moon Spirit like Yue, it's ironic that both girls have names that invoke imagery to the moon. It's almost as if Sokka has a bit of a type...

Suki Taught Sokka Many Times, But Not Vice-Versa

Sokka and Suki Training on Kyoshi Island, Avatar

Sokka and Suki are both non-bending warriors, but in of their skills, things haven't been equal in of give and take. Suki was the superior warrior from the get-go, which is why she was able to teach Sokka a thing or two about fighting when they first met on Kyoshi Island.

Not only that, but after the Hundred Year War, Sokka took part in chi blocking training sessions held by Suki, and although he never used the technique in battle, someone as smart as him must've definitely picked up something in that time. Sokka, on the other hand, didn't really teach Suki much of anything. Her jokes could use some improvement, so if Sokka wanted to teach her anything, that would be a good place to start.

They Apparently Moved To The Suburbs

Sokka Kissing Suki on the Beach, Avatar

The fate of Sokka and Suki after the Avatar: The Last Airbender graphic novels can only be left to speculation, since the creators never stated what happened to the couple. The only hint that fans have ever received came from a 2014 Q&A with Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra co-creators Bryan Konietzko and Mike DiMartino, who, when asked about the couple, stated that nothing interesting happened between them, and that they moved to the suburbs.

Many interpreted this as the suburbs outside of Republic City. This implies that they managed to start a family, and made the move to settle down somewhere where their children would be able to live away from the bustling city. Unfortunately, this is all just speculation, and many fans even believe that DiMartino was joking when he made this comment. Still, it's the only lead we've gotten on one of the franchise's most captivating romances, so we'll take it!
