Though Avatar: The Last Airbender might be an animated children’s series that aired from 2005 to 2008, but it’s had a strong fan base for many years. One of the things that has drawn fans into the series all along is that there are so many compelling, well-written characters.

Even many of the main protagonists are complex in their own ways, and fans also love the main heroes for their dynamic, unique personalities. However, regardless of who your favorite character is, some seem like they would make better friends than others.

Avoid: Jet

Jet is a character that might have had some good intentions, but the means he used to achieve his ends weren’t acceptable. He was willing to let innocent people die to try to get back at the Fire Nation.

And, while his pain is understandable, letting more innocent people get hurt wasn’t the answer. He was generally untrustworthy, and even though he somewhat redeemed himself in the end, he wouldn’t be great to hang out with.

Friends: Suki

Suki is someone who would be really fun to hang out with because she’s a badass, but she also can relax and joke around. She’s an accomplished warrior who could help teach you how to defend yourself, but she also doesn’t mind a nice day at the beach or making a sarcastic comment.

She’s someone that would be easy to go on an adventure with or just hang out around the house which is the ideal friend.

Avoid: June

June smiling confidently in ATLA.

June is more of a ing character than most of the others on this list, and she is actually one of the most interesting side antagonists. She’s kind of a badass, and her shirshu, Nyla, is also one of the most interesting characters from the series.

However, June is pretty intimidated, and she doesn’t seem like someone who would be easy to know. She might make a decent friend as long as you’re tough enough to handle someone who isn’t particularly worried about your feelings.

Friends: Katara and Aang

Katara and Aang might be quite different in some ways, but they do have a lot in common. While some fans find them annoying at times, this is a bit unfair as they are both so young at the time of the journey. They are both good people, and while they can both get a little overemotional, they would be fun to hang out with most of the time.

The other good thing about both Katara and Aang is that they are very loyal and protective of the people they care about. They would always have your back and try to you.

Avoid: Pre-season three Zuko

Zuko is a fan-favorite character, and his redemption arc is often seen as one of the best from any piece of media. However, he would only be a good friend to have once he’s older and has finally ed Team Avatar.

And, even then, it takes him a while to learn about friendship. Before this, he was volatile, moody, and angry. He didn’t really know how to have healthy relationships, and it wouldn’t be that fun to be around him.

Friends: Uncle Iroh

Of all the characters that fans would want to hang out with, Iroh is at the top of the list for many people. He’s very wise, calm, and caring, and will always listen to a friend's problems while making them a delicious cup of tea.

He would offer advice that would actually help you, and overall, you’d be able to relax around him and just enjoy one another’s company.

Avoid: Mai

Mai is an underrated character, and there are many great things about her. However, most people probably couldn't handle being friends with her. For one thing, she’s not someone who is particularly complimentary, and she’s hard to get to know.

She is more reserved, and she does enjoy being alone. This doesn’t mean she isn’t loyal, however, and she can be a really good friend. It would just take more time and effort to earn her trust and affection.

Friends: Toph

Many fans would want to hang out with Toph, but you would need to have a bit of thick skin as Toph loves to tease and joke around. However, if you enjoy these kinds of friendship dynamics, Toph is perfect.

She likes a good prank and is a great adventure companion, and while she might not always show it in her words, she does care a lot about her friends and would do a lot to protect them.

Avoid: Azula

Azula is one of the most interesting protagonists in the series, but this doesn’t mean she’s a good friend. She can be extremely terrifying, and she’s also selfish and cruel.

She ends up hurting and pushing away everyone around her, and it’s easy to see by the way she treated Mai and Ty Lee that you could never trust her. Plus, she’d always just want to have power and control.

Friends: Sokka

Sokka is the ideal character to have a great time with. He can be serious when he needs to be, but most of the time, he loves to joke around and have fun.

He has a good sense of humor, and you’d definitely be able to tease him right back. But, beyond all of the hilarious times, Sokka is also someone who can be counted on to come help and a friend if they need him.
