Marvel Cinematic Universe actor Sebastian Stan throws shade at the ending for his character, Bucky Barnes, and Steve Rogers aka Captain America (Chris Evans) in Avengers: Endgame - and Star Wars star John Boyega responds. Stan ed the MCU alongside Evans in Captain America: The First Avenger, and though his character was seeming killed in the movie, he returned for the sequel, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Steve's best friend had been brainwashed by Hydra and turned into the assassin known as the Winter Soldier, but it was Bucky's close friendship with Captain America that ultimately saved him, including the saying, "I'm with you till the end of the line." Steve and Bucky's friendship even became the catalyst for the Avengers splitting apart in Captain America: Civil War.
However, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which is currently filming. Many fans took issue with Captain America's ending, arguing it's counterintuitive to how the character's arc had evolved in Phase 3, with him moving on from Peggy and focusing instead on his friends. It seems Stan himself may agree with that argument, according to a recent Instagram post.
On his Instagram Stories, Bucky Barnes and Captain America's ending in Avengers: Endgame along with the flushed face emoji. See a screenshot of Stan's story below.
Shortly after Stan's Instagram Story was posted, Star Wars sequel trilogy star Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker's handling of Rey and Kylo Ren's relationship in the movie, which prompted backlash from some fans. Presumably, Boyega is welcoming Stan to the club of shading his franchise's handling of certain character arcs and endings. See Boyega's tweet below.
As was initially the case with Boyega's vague post about Rey and Kylo Ren, it's not clear what point Stan is making exactly with his Instagram Story. Perhaps Stan isn't necessarily criticizing Avengers: Endgame writers, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, but the fan's vehement response. That said, Boyega and many Marvel fans on various social media sites are taking the post to mean Stan is throwing shade at the way Steve and Bucky's ending was handled in Avengers: Endgame. Until Stan clarifies his post or offers a concrete answer to how he feels the relationship was handled, though, fans will have to wait to get clarity on what he's really thinking.
That said, Stan's post, the screenshot of the tweet he highlights and the response to the actor's Instagram Story - including Boyega's - goes to show how many fans are emotionally invested in the MCU, particularly in Captain America's character. Considering how key Bucky became to Captain America's storyline after The Winter Soldier, many fans expected more from Avengers: Endgame and were ultimately disappointed with how it played out. Now it seems Stan may be one of the many disappointed by Captain America and Bucky Barnes' ending in Avengers: Endgame, at least if we're interpreting his Instagram post correctly.
