musical dream sequence) and finally kissed in the final episode.

Since Peggy's husband was never definitively named in MCU canon, fans were quick to assume it was Sousa. However, last year's Endgame flipped the script thanks to the newly discovered time travel technology. After spotting an older Peggy in the 1970s, Steve decided to travel back to the 1940s so he and Peggy could get the happily ever after they had both wanted. Reactions to this ending were decidedly mixed, as some questioned how it could be possible without erasing Peggy's achievements. It didn't help when Endgame's writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely said they always believed Steve was Peggy's mysterious husband, thus taking away Sousa's potential ending.

There is an explanation for Steve and Peggy being together that doesn't erase Sousa's relationship with Peggy (Steve's in an alternate timeline), but regardless of that, Gjokaj isn't all that bothered by the change in Peggy's partners. While speaking with EWGjokaj actually insisted it made perfect sense that Peggy would end up with Steve. "To be honest, it's so clear in the writing and it's so clear in the way Hayley plays it that [Steve] was never gonna be replaced," said Gjokaj. "I think that was the beautiful tragedy of his attraction to her is that he knew that and he wanted to be with her anyway. He knew he was always going to be second place, and I think that's a little heartbreaking about Sousa."

Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) in Avengers: Endgame

For the first time since Agent Carter, Gjokaj will be returning to the MCU to Agent Carter after the show's cancellation, and it could also reveal whether or not Sousa is still with Peggy.

Gjokaj's thoughts regarding Endgame's final moments make sense. Steve's "death" hit Peggy especially hard, and there were several moments in Agent Carter where she mourned him. At the same time, Peggy and Sousa had a sweet relationship as well, and it wouldn't be fair to completely erase it. If one subscribes to the alternate timeline explanation (which feels like the most logical for several reasons), then Sousa's time with Peggy remains intact while she gets her happy ending with Steve elsewhere.
