Warning: This article contains spoilers for What If...? episode 5.

The Avengers lineup is confusing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and What If...? episode 5 brings the MCU a new threat in the form of a deadly zombie virus. After the virus escapes from the Quantum Realm, there's not much that the heroes can do. In fact, after the Avengers get infected, the zombie virus spreads even faster. However, all is not lost. At the end of the episode, the remaining superheroes, including T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) and Spider-Man (voiced by Hudson Thames), head to Wakanda, hoping to use the Mind Stone to distribute a cure.

Ant-Man/Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) is a humorous addition throughout the What If...? zombie episode. Lang was one of the first victims of the virus, comically falling prey to Hank Pym, who received the virus in the Quantum Realm. However, Vision (Paul Bettany) was able to cure Lang with the Mind Stone. Unfortunately, all he could save was Ant-Man's head, which sits in a glass jar. The character's disembodied head serves as a clever gag, subtly poking fun at memes and jokes about Rudd secretly being immortal.

In addition to the gag about Paul Rudd memes, Marvel has more self-aware humor. During the episode, Spider-Man mourns the loss of the Avengers, saying that "they're all gone." However, Ant-Man notes that the heroes might not be totally gone after all. "You still have me," he says. After Spider-Man apologizes for forgetting Ant-Man is an Avenger, Rudd's character adds a clarification. He might not "officially" be an Avenger, but he is "at heart." The joke points out the confusion around Marvel's current Avengers lineup.

Antman What if Paul Rudd immortal gag joke

At this point, not even Marvel seems to know who's an Avenger. At the end of Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) are dead, Captain America (Chris Evans) chose to live his days in the past, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) took off with the Guardians of the Galaxy, and Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) are seemingly off doing their own thing in Marvel's Disney+ shows. So it's unclear who's actually an Avenger by the film's conclusion, and What If...? acknowledges the confusion in the episode. Is Ant-Man an Avenger? What about Spider-Man? For now, the MCU isn't making any final choices on the matter.

The confusion also creates opportunity. With the Avengers lineup being unclear, Marvel can make it whatever the studio wants. After all, Phase 4 is bringing numerous firsts into the MCU. For example, Avengers film still years away, Marvel is clearly embracing the confusion.
