characters such as Kate Bishop to the hero-skinned Destiny clone.
The fact that Marvel's Avengers has not been a financial success is not a huge surprise at this point. Reports earlier this month suggested that the game may have lost more than 96% of its active players in just a few weeks. s have complained that they are unable to play online, as there are simply not enough other players in the game to matchmake with. Meanwhile, both NBA 2K21 and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 out-earned the comic spin-off in a huge earnings upset upon launch, and it was a telling sign of what developer Crystal Dynamics and publisher Square Enix could expect moving into the holidays.
According to COVID-19 pandemic, forcing Square Enix to spend more money on marketing after delaying the release of the title due to resulting development complications.
Another likely issue with Marvel's Avengers is that the enhanced versions for both the PS5 and Xbox Series X have been delayed, as well. The title was originally meant to launch alongside both consoles but has now been pushed back into 2021. Reports suggest that this is because the game is not in a state that is ready to release and that Square Enix is still working hard to fix the multitude of issues with the PS4 and Xbox One edition.
Marvel's Avengers may not have been one of the most highly-anticipated games of 2020 but it is still strange to see such an established franchise fail quite so badly. With more DLC in the pipeline along with PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions on the way, it is feasible that Square Enix might eventually break even. But the performance of the game will likely put off other publishers from funding similar titles in the future.
Marvel's Avengers is available for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and it will be available for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2021.
