Few Marvel Comics are more iconic and influential than Avengers sported many different looks. A recently shared image showcasing George Perez's original art for The Infinity Gauntlet #3 features a few heroes, including Scarlet Witch, Hulk, Thor, and Quasar, sporting different looks from what appeared in the final cover art for the issue.

The Infinity Gauntlet by Jim Starlin, George Perez, and Ron Lim is one of the most popular Marvel Comics stories ever. The six-issue series featured Thanos collecting all of the Infinity Stones and erasing half of existence from reality in an attempt to gain the love of Death. In response, Adam Warlock led the Avengers, the greatest cosmic forces from across the universe, and other Marvel heroes to take down the Mad Titan. The Infinity Gauntlet would lead to multiple comic book spinoffs, with significant pieces of the story becoming key parts of the Infinity Saga in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Recently, TheGeorgePerez.com including Scarlet Witch getting an entirely different costume (and headpiece), Cyclops's cowl and boots being removed, Thor getting a beard and different helmet, Hulk wearing a jumpsuit, and Adam Warlock losing a belt around his waist.

So, what caused the changes? Well, besides the obvious fact Marvel Comics has final edit before a cover is published, there were story reasons why the Avengers and Marvel heroes were altered. For example, in 1991, just before the comic came out, Thor just merged with Eric Masterson, creating the long-haired, bearded Thor. It's likely Perez drew the characters as they were at the time, but with the changes in the Marvel Universe happening as The Infinity Gauntlet was being made, characters needed to be updated to fit the current continuity.

Regardless of the reasons the characters were changed, seeing the original The Infinity Gauntlet cover from George Perez compared to what was published, shows how much an image can change from its initial drawing and inking to its final print. In this case, a number of Avengers were given small updates to fit the current Marvel Comics story, to create what turned out to be one of the most epic covers of all time.
