The Avengers may be Earth's Mightiest Heroes, but they're not prepared for a battle with Thanos (Josh Brolin) in Avengers: Infinity War. According to writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the Avengers will not be ready for a clash with the Mad Titan when he debuts.

Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely explained in a set interview that the Avengers won't immediately recover from the events of Captain America: Civil War. The g of the Sokovia Accords and the fight between Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.) tore the team apart, leaving many of the heroes incarcerated. Markus says the film won't "devalue" Civil War:

CHRISTOPHER MARKUS: That is something we didn’t want to blow off. Didn’t want to devalue Civil War by having a phone call saying, “Let’s all get back together because there’s an even worse guy.” Nah, everything’s fine now. So we dragged that a long way through it so that we are valuing the resentments we’ve built up between these characters.

STEPHEN MCFEELY: They’re ill-prepared to handle this.

CHRISTOPHER MARKUS: Yeah. And it shows.

Captain America: Civil War had such an enormous impact on so many characters that it stands to reason that the events of the film will still loom over the team. It may be a long time before the Avengers can forgive each other for everything that happened in the past. Though all the Avengers will be fighting on the same side again, it doesn't mean they've worked through all their issues. Based on the comments from Markus and McFeely, it appears that the Avengers' personal problems may hold them back when they team up to fight Thanos.
