Things are quite busy on the Marvel front, to say the least. Marvel Studios is now in production on a pair of Marvel Cinematic Universe films scheduled to hit theaters in 2018 (Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite.
Just yesterday (at the time of writing this), Marvel Kingdom Hearts III, given that Marvel's close ties with Disney open up the possibility of Marvel characters appearing in the next installment in the Kingdom Hearts franchise. However, it turns out the news instead involves a different Marvel/Square Enix collaboration, known as The Avengers Project.
You can watch the official announcement trailer for The Avengers Project above; then read on for the official details concerning this "multi-year, multi-game" partnership that Marvel and Square Enix have set in motion starting with Avengers Project, below:
A game based on beloved Marvel heroes, The Avengers project is being crafted by Crystal Dynamics – longtime developers of the award winning Tomb Raider series – in collaboration with lauded Deus Ex developer Eidos-Montréal.
The Avengers project is being designed for gamers worldwide and will be packed with all the characters, environments, and iconic moments that have thrilled longtime fans of the franchise. Featuring a completely original story, it will introduce a universe gamers can play in for years to come. More details on The Avengers project and other games will be announced in 2018.
The trailer for The Avengers Project doesn't shed much light on what its "completely original story" will be and instead features glimpses of familiar and easily-recognized Marvel iconography, such as Thor's hammer Mjolnir and Captain America's famous patriotic-colored shield. It's to be expected that the game will thus feature all of the current Avengers team (or recent team ) from the MCU - Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Black Widow and so forth - as well as possibly MCU additions, like include the Captain Marvel character ahead of her big screen debut, so that's more reason to think that The Avengers Project will follow suit in this sense.
Between Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, the Injustice 2 video game release. The Avengers Project has the potential to help even those scales in this respect, while also delivering more Avengers goodness (now of the playable variety) for everyone to enjoy.
