Marvel's TVA are finally starring in their own miniseries after their recent streaming success on Disney+'s Loki, and Marvel has just revealed that Wolverine's forgotten son will be ing them as they put together their own multiversal Avengers-style team. However, whether he can step out of his father’s short, sharp shadow remains to be seen.

The first look at David Yardin’s variant cover for TVA #3 has seemingly revealed that Jimmy Hudson, son of the original Ultimate Wolverine, will be working with the titular organization, which makes perfect sense for his role as a multiversal misfit. TVA is coming from Katharyn Blair and Pere Pérez.

A team of multiversal heroes rush through a portal on David Yardin's Variant Cover to TVA #3

Jimmy first appeared as the star of 2010's Ultimate X #1, written by Jeph Loeb and drawn by Arthur Adams. The story was set shortly after the original Ultimate Wolverine’s death and established Jimmy as his replacement. What readers wouldn't have guessed from these humble origins is that Jimmy would last decades, move to Marvel's main continuity and eventually something like the TVA.

TVA's team is turning several variant heroes into an Avengers-style superteam, including Spider-Gwen and Peggy Carter's Captain Britain.

Surprisingly, Jimmy was one of the few survivors of the original Ultimate Universe after its destruction in 2015’s Secret Wars, written by Jonathan Hickman with art by Esad Ribić. He popped up in writer Cullen Bunn’s X-Men: Blue shortly thereafter, bonding with the anti-symbiote predator known as Poison. Sadly, six years then ed without any further adventures for Jimmy, and he only recently returned in Cullen Bunn and Roberto Di Salvo's Venom War: Deadpool #1.

The series revealed that Jimmy has been laying low in the underground Monster Metropolis, losing even more control of his mind to the Poison symbiote. Thankfully, things are looking up, as the art seemingly reveals that the TVA's new team of alt-universe superheroes will include Jimmy.

Giving the Time Variance Authority Their Own Avengers Is a Genius Idea

TVA #1 cover, featuring Spider-Gwen, Miss Minutes, and other cast

The TVA, aka the Time Variance Authority, have been around in Marvel for decades, but only recently with their starring role in Disney+’s Loki have they become major players. Their job is to clean up messes in Marvel’s timeline, and often find themselves working at odds against characters like the Fantastic Four. Part of the TVA’s appeal is that they’ve always poked fun at Marvel editorial’s own desire to keep continuity straight, and in an era where fans are obsessed with ‘lore’ it makes perfect sense that they’re having a moment.

The new TVA series will include an Avengers-style team of alt-universe variants, including Spider-Gwen, Peggy Carter and a Channing Tatum-esque Gambit, as well as who look like the MCU's Hunter B-15, Sylvie, Mobius and Ouroboros. Pérez's cover essentially confirms Jimmy Hudson will soon this superteam to investigate a serial killer stalking the TVA offices.

TVA's superteam is likely Jimmy Hudson's last chance to take off as a character.

TVA Needs to Make Jimmy Feel Unique

New Wolverine Comic Logan Son Wendigo

After six years in the shadows, the question is whether Jimmy has any future beyond this one miniseries. If he's going to stick as a character, then it’s vital that he gets a consistent characterization and motive that sets him apart from the rest of Wolverine's family. His lack of staying power in other stories proves that ‘slightly younger, blond Wolverine’ just isn't enough, while the symbiote angle has failed to earn him the stories he needs to shine.

As a series that will explicitly deal with its heroes being multiversal variants, there's genuine hope that TVA can find a unique angle on Jimmy, giving him a new life in Marvel lore. However, it's also likely this is the character's last chance to really take off. Is Jimmy Hudson going to remain a third-rate Wolverine forever, or is he about to find a new interdimensional purpose in the TVA's makeshift Avengers?

TVA #1 is coming December 18 from Marvel Comics, with TVA #3 following February 26, 2025.
