If you want multiclass in Avowed, the Fighter and Ranger skill trees offer great synergy. Rangers in Avowed have a mixture of skills focused on melee fighting and ranged weapons like bows or guns. By combining the melee skills of the Ranger with some of the Fighter’s melee skills, it’s possible to make a powerful combination of the two classes.
The best synergy between classes comes from focusing on several aspects of combat: critical strikes, attack speed, and mobility. Because this build will focus on dual-wielding one-handed weapons, you don’t have to worry about the blocking and parrying skills. Instead, you’ll want to focus on your damage output and your ability to dodge or escape dangerous combat situations since you’ll be a bit of a glass cannon. Unlike a Wizard/Ranger multiclass, you'll be focused more on close-range fighting than ranged fighting with this build.

Best Abilities For A Fighter Ranger Multiclass Build
Fighters And Rangers Both Have Skills That Improve Critical Hits
When starting a Fighter/Ranger build in Avowed, the first skill I would take would be Evasive. It will make your dodging easier and give you a good feel for the fighting style you will use going forward. That said, melee combat can be a little punishing early on, so you can also take Constant Recovery to help keep yourself alive while you get a better feel for your dodge timing. Charge can also help you be more mobile and do damage simultaneously.
Fighter Skill |
Base Level Requirement |
Effect |
---|---|---|
None |
The dashes forward and deals explosive damage, interrupting and breaking enemy blocks. This helps you be more mobile and prevent enemies from landing big attacks on you. |
|
Level 5 |
Increases damage done by melee weapon critical hits. |
|
Level 15 |
After receiving damage, your next attack within the specified time limit deals a certain percentage of the damage you took back at the enemy. You start having five seconds to deal 70% of the damage taken, with each metric increasing with each level of this skill. |
|
(Optional) Iron Fists |
Level 5 |
Increases the attack quality of unarmed strikes. This can be used to avoid finding gear in the early game, allowing you to save money and craft materials when you find unique weapons you want to buy/upgrade. |
The unfortunate truth about a Fighter/Ranger build is that the class won’t really get going until Level 5 skills unlock. This is where you can start taking skills that help boost your damage output, like Finesse and Devastating Criticals. You may also want to consider Iron Fists to get ahead on weapon quality, but you’ll miss out on some good weapon enchantments if you decide to use fists instead.
Ranger Skill |
Base Level Requirement |
Effect |
---|---|---|
None |
Reduces the stamina cost of dodging. This helps you stay mobile while saving stamina for attacks. |
|
Level 5 |
Increases damage done with one-handed melee weapons. |
|
Level 5 |
You will sometimes get additional crafting materials when picking up herbs, making gear upgrade material cheaper at the second level. This is an evergreen skill for all builds, making upgrading gear easier. |
|
Level 10 |
Slides through enemies and knock them down. This allows for more mobility in fights and serves as crowd control. |
|
Level 15 |
It increases the chances of getting a critical hit. |
|
Level 20 |
Increases move speed, attack speed, and stamina regeneration. |
|
(Optional) Piercing Thrusts |
Level 5 |
Increases power attack damage with daggers, swords, and spears. Helpful extra damage when using a power strike to close the distance between you and an enemy, but not necessary since you will be focused more on quick attacks. |
Once you hit Level 15 skills, you’ll want to grab Critical Strike from the Ranger tree to improve your crit chance. This works especially well with the Level 20 Ranger skill, Flurry of Blows, which increases your attack speed and, in turn, your chances of landing a crit. As for the Fighter side, Retribution can be a good way to turn any damage done to you into a weapon against your enemies.
Best Attributes For Fighter Ranger Multiclass
Dexterity Might Help With Damage While Perception Increases Crit Chance
Because this Ranger/Fighter build is focused on melee damage and attack speed, both Might and Dexterity are good options for attributes. Dexterity’s increased action speed can also help heal more quickly, which can be helpful since you’ll be a bit fragile with this build. Although Perception is more closely associated with ranged weapons, you’ll want to put a good number of points into it because it improves your chances of landing a critical hit.

Should You Accept Or Reject Sapadal’s Power In Avowed?
You’ll need to make choices that have consequences throughout Avowed, so when you’re asked to accept a piece of Sapadal’s power, should you do it?
If you want to lean even more heavily into trying to land crits, you can take some points out of Might and put them into Resolve. Resolve will give you more Stamina, letting you unleash more attacks in short succession. The faster cooldown on Second Wind could also be useful earlier in the game when you may find yourself dying more often while you wait to hit your useful Level 5 skills.
Best Weapons, Armor, & Items For Fighter Ranger Multiclass
Fighter Rangers Should Use Quick Weapons With High Critical Hit Chances
Since this build prioritizes attack speed and critical hits, daggers can be a good choice for weapons. Unique daggers like Sheathed in Summer and Survivor’s Guilt deal bonus damage on each hit, making your quick attack speed even more effective. However, daggers have a short range and require you to get in close for attacks, which can leave you vulnerable and force you to waste stamina getting between enemies.

Avowed: All Dawnshore Treasure Map Locations & Rewards
The three treasure map locations and rewards in Avowed's first area, Dawnshore, include the Intimidating Feline Codpiece and Woedica's Inheritance.
Mixing a dagger with a one-handed sword could be a good option. The unique sword Carnet’s Cutlass, which you can get during the Debt of Blood quest - can work well with this build because it gives you an additional 15% attack speed after you kill an enemy. Alternatively, pistols also work well with critical hits, so if you find yourself needing some extra range, you could wield a one-handed melee weapon and a pistol. That said, a pistol isn't optimal for this build since it won't get buffs from Devastating Criticals.
When it comes to armor, you’ll want something lighter so you aren’t giving yourself a big stamina penalty. This will mean you’re easier to kill, but once you get used to avoiding damage, it won’t be as big of a deal. So long as you play fights right, you should be able to avoid taking too many big hits.
How To Play A Fighter Ranger Multiclass Build
Fighter Rangers Should Rely On Exploiting Openings And Landing Multiple Hits
Mobility is your friend with this build because you are a bit squishy. You’ll want to time your attacks to unleash a flurry of quick attacks between your enemies’ strikes. This will mean much dodging and favoring quick attacks over power attacks. That said, power attacks can be a helpful initial strike to close the distance between you and an enemy. One of Avowed's Godlike Abilities, Severed Branch, can also help improve movement speed.

Avowed Hits Impressive Steam Charts Milestone Before Official Release
Days before its release, Avowed has already hit a major milestone on Steam’s Top Sellers Chart, proving that the RPG already has a lot of fans.
You’ll probably want to take Kai to serve as a tank, as he is Avowed’s main frontline fighter companion. If an enemy shifts their focus to Kai, this is an excellent opportunity for you to exploit that opening and land multiple hits. Yatzli’s Arduous Delay of Motion ability also works well with this build, as it will slow enemies and help you maneuver around them more easily.
