Early on in Avowed, you will meet Giuliana, the owner of a brothel, and she will ask you to pick up some goods for her and her workers. Once you find her shipment, you will discover that Giulana is smuggling in contraceptive herbs that are illegal in the Envoy's home country of Aedyr. This presents you with a choice: do you let Giuliana have her shipment, or confront her about it?

Giuliana’s quest, “A Lady Never Tells,” can only be started once you’ve Avowed’s Dawnshore region. Once you’ve agreed to get Giuliana’s shipment for her, you will head back to the docks and either sneak into the warehouse where they’re being held, talk your way in or defeat some more Sparrowhawks to get the herbs. Once you have them, you can return to Giuliana and make your decision.

What Happens If You Help Giuliana In Avowed

Helping Giuliana Rewards You With Gold And A Unique Item

There are a few ways to help Giuliana. The first way is to simply hand her goods back to her and keep your mouth shut about it. This will win Giuliana’s favor, and she will give you 300 gold and a unique trinket called Night-Mistress’ Favor which will recharge your essence while you’re near a companion.

Once you reach Emerald Stair in Avowed, figuring out where the Steel Garrote are holed up will have major implications for Fior mes Ivèrno.

Alternatively, you can confront Giuliana about the contents of her shipment. She won’t be happy that you’ve brought it up, but as long as you assure her you aren’t going to say anything about it, she will still give you the Night-Mistress’ Favor. If you pick the right dialogue options, you can also get 300 gold using this method. But if you want both, the easiest way is to simply give her what she wants and not confront her about it.

What Happens If You Turn Giuliana In

Threatening To Turn In Giuliana Will Earn You Extra Gold

Giuliana angry with the Envoy for mentioning the contents of her shipment in Avowed

Although the dialogue options at the end of “A Lady Never Tells” make it seem like you could turn Giuliana in, that’s not actually an option – all you’re doing if you pick those options is choosing to extort her. If you tell Giuliana you’re going to turn her in, she’ll give you 700 gold and tell you to get lost (rightfully so). You can’t get the Night-Mistress’ Favor if you choose to extort Giuliana.

10 Best Games To Play If You Like Avowed

Avowed has taken the RPG world by storm and garnered new fans. However, once players are done, there’s plenty of similar games worth checking out.

Deciding to help Giuliana is definitely the better option here. While a lot of Avowed's choices are morally gray, this case seems pretty cut and dry. Choosing to withhold contraceptives from Giuliana and her workers is a pretty ghoulish thing to do. At once, you’re denying them important medical care and also imposing the laws of Aedyr on people who are living outside its borders. That said, this is a good early chance to show your loyalty to Aedyr if you’re trying to do a lawful evil run.

If you’re looking at this choice from purely a gameplay perspective, then you’ll still just want to help out Giuliana. Night-Mistress’ Favor is a unique item, so you won’t be able to get it any other way. Avowed offers plenty of other ways to earn gold, so it’s better to grab the item you can only get here.

"A Lady Never Tells" is a good example of how Avowed draws on contemporary issues to inform its story. This may be a low-stakes quest in the grand scheme of the game, but it still sticks with you after the credits roll because of the strong emotions many players likely have on the topic. Avowed's willingness to confront players with choices that are relevant to the real world is part of what makes its role-playing feel so meaningful.
