Thalla the Taskmaster in Dawnshore. There you will fight Thalla after confronting the Sparrowhawks harassing the Apothecary merchant, Grysca. You can speak with Thalla initially next to the stairs leading up to the Apothecary, but he won't fight you until after you've given the Ambassador the emperor's missive and confronted Wetenu and his goons at the shop. Thalla has a handful of heavy attacks that are relatively easy to dodge, and you'll get some decent loot after taking him down.

I was Level 7 when I took him on, and didn't have too hard of a time, so you can probably approach him between levels 5–8, depending on your skill level and difficulty settings. I wasn't expecting an encounter at first when I approached the Apothecary, but a cutscene and dialogue interaction with Wetenu will automatically trigger when you approach the shop, so prepare yourself beforehand. If you're playing a Ranger or Fighter build in Avowed, the Evasive dodge ive ability is useful for Thalla because you'll be dodging out of his attack radius often.

Where To Find Thalla The Taskmaster Boss (Location)

Thalla The Taskmaster Is The Leader Of The Sparrowhawks In Paradis

Thalla the Taskmaster isn't hard to find, and he didn't end up fighting me right away, so I wasn't even sure he was a boss at first. He's located on the east side of Paradis at the bottom of the stairs outside The Mermaid's Den. Fast travel to the Eastern Paradis Gate Beacon and head north up the first set of stairs, following the road straight until you see the big ogre on your right. You'll be able to speak with him to discover that the Sparrowhawks aren't going to attack you (yet), and will then be free to roam the area.

After exploring and completing various side quests, I finally decided to advance the main quest by speaking with the Ambassador and giving him the emperor's missive. Once completed, I went to stock up on some potions at the Apothecary and wasn't prepared for a fight. If you approach the Apothecary after speaking with the Ambassador, a dialogue will trigger with Wetenu and his posse of Sparrowhawk goons. These guys are shaking down Grysca (the merchant), and to fight Thalla, you'll have to confront the Sparrowhawks first. Take them down before Thalla arrives for a much easier time.

How To Beat Thalla the Taskmaster (Weakness & Best Strategy)

Use Vines To Hold The Ogre In Place

Thalla will come running down the alley after the encounter starts. He has a handful of main attacks, including a ranged attack where he lobs a boulder at you, a couple ground slam attacks with a huge AoE (area of effect), and a basic club swing. One effective strategy is to have Kai tank Thalla as much as possible, and whether you are playing as a Ranger build in Avowed or have Marius in your party, use Tanglefoot or Binding Roots (or both) to keep Thalla pinned down. Thalla's biggest weakness is he is slow, and his moves are obvious.

Before taking on Thalla, I had an upgraded unique weapon and some decent armor from completing bounties and side quests. I recommend having your equipment upgraded before entering this area for a much better chance.

The Evasive ability is useful during this fight as you'll end up doing a lot of kiting to escape his ground slams. The area is relatively small, so keeping him confined using the brambles and timing ranged or melee attacks around his swings will build up his Stun Meter much faster. I was able to run in and shank him multiple times before he could wind up another swing, and still had enough time to back-step dodge out of the smash radius. His ranged stone throw attack is easy to spot (and dodge) as he'll start winding up pretty clearly.

Frost accumulation will make even Thalla slower than he already is, and it's extremely effective when used alongside Tanglefoot or Binding Roots. I used the basic Grimoire chill blades and a Fine +2 Drawn in Winter axe from the Watcher's Mirror Ancient Memory. These combined were enough to continually freeze him up and run in for a charged attack, and they stacked up his Stun Meter substantially. I also tried a fire strategy (Sheathed in Summer +2 and Fan of Flames Grimoire attack) that was equally effective at bringing his health down over time while tangling him up and dodging.

Overall, Thalla the Taskmaster isn't too difficult in Avowed if you take advantage of his slow speed and keep him tied down as much as possible. Elemental damage is effective, with Frost being ideal. When used in combination with the vine abilities, you'll be able to keep Thalla immobilized for a majority of the fight and give yourself extra time to get some distance when he manages to wind up for a ground smash or club swing. Once defeated, Thalla drops some useful crafting materials, including Adra and a Paradisan Ladder, as well as x10 Silver Fennings.
