Avowed: Should You Give The Meteorite To Josep Or The Giftbearer In Memory Of The Deep?

There is a side quest called Memory of the Deep in Avowed, where you must choose between two different quest givers to decide who gets the meteorite once it's retrieved. There is a man named Josep in Coastal Farms who is wondering why all of his revenants ran off, while the Giftbearer is waiting by the lake and believes the meteorite should be taken far away. You will have the option to choose who gets it in the end.

Most of the side quests in Avowed have shades of gray, and this one is no different. It doesn't feel like either choice is better or worse, and no long-term consequences seem to be present. However, there are different rewards and different outcomes, and there is a third choice as well that can get you all of the rewards if you want them.

If you speak to Josep and give him the meteorite first, which is an important distinction in this quest, you will not be able to go back to the Giftbearer. You will give up the meteorite and will receive a couple of rewards in return. You will get the following rewards:

Chanter's Panpipes
550 Gold

The Chanter's Panpipes are a unique accessory in Avowed. Notably, you do need to speak to Josep first to start the quest as that will give you the most options, but you should talk to him second after you have retrieved the meteorite to get the best result. If you do so, you have the chance to get all of the rewards in the quest.

What Happens If You Give The Meteorite To The Giftbearer

Appeasing The Gods Or A Different Choice

If instead, you approach the Giftbearer first after you retrieve the meteorite, you will have a couple of options. You could first give him the meteorite without thinking about it, and you will receive 550 gold. That completes the quest, but you can then go back to the lake where you originally found him, and you can get the Statuette of Lament.

However, there is a secret choice in this quest that lets you get all of the rewards. First, speak to the Giftbearer, but choose the option that lets you negotiate with the Giftbearer. You can then choose to give him a memory instead, and he will be satisfied by this answer. You will get the gold, and you can return to the shore of the lake to get the same reward.

After that, go to Josep and give him the meteorite to get the other rewards. This seems like the best option for this side quest, as there don't seem to be other consequences. No matter what, the Giftbearer will sail away, and Josep will work on his experiments. Of course, you could break this quest and receive no rewards if you choose to withhold it from both parties in Avowed.
