Baldur's Gate 3 was released to both critical acclaim and enormous commercial success, making it a breakthrough experience and one that introduced D&D to so many new players. It is an enormous game packed with potentially hundreds of hours of content for players to get through, encouraging repeat playthrough after repeated playthrough. Naturally, players can get bored though, and while fans can always go back to Larian's other critically acclaimed series, Divinity Original Sin, for some Baldur's Gate-esque action, they lack the characters they know and love from BG3.

So, now that Baldur's Gate 3's DLC plans have been revealed, players are looking forward to their next Baldur's Gate fix. One way that the Baldur's Gate franchise could continue under Larian's leadership is through a board game, one that encomes everything that makes the video game experience great, packed with miniatures, thousands of cards, and a plethora of rules. While there's always D&D to get stuck into, it's actually possible that a Baldur's Gate 3 board game could eventually become a reality.

BG3 Board Game May Become Real After Divinity Original Sin Board Game Was A Success

Divinity Original Sin Board Game Launched Back In November 2023

The idea of a Baldur's Gate 3 board game is not completely out of the realm of possibility, especially as Larian Studios has found quite significant success with its board game adaptation of Divinity Original Sin. Starting as a Kickstarter project back in 2019, the Divinity Original Sin board game was successfully funded, earning $1,845,411 from 10,565 backers. It has since become available to the public through Larian's own website, and even has three expansions adding so much more content to the game.

The Divinity Original Sin board game's Kickstarter project managed to unlock 20 additional stretch goals, adding more miniatures, characters, enemies, and more to the game. It was shipped out in November 2023, with the majority of players getting their hands on their copy in December 2023.

The Divinity Original Sin board game takes the core ideas of the video game, adding characters from across both entries in the series, and lets players explore unique narratives and fight familiar foes. It's not far-fetched to imagine how this could translate extremely well to a Baldur's Gate 3 version, as BG3 and the Divinity Original Sin video games share a lot of gameplay similarities. They're both choice-driven narrative experiences with a colorful cast of characters and extremely in-depth turn-based combat, all of which were excellently and thoughtfully adapted in the Divinity Original Sin board game.

A BG3 version of this would certainly smash its Kickstarter goals, much like how the Cyberpunk 2077 board game smashed its goals within a handful of hours. It would also be another great way to bridge the gap between BG3 fans and D&D, as the Divinity Original Sin board game requires less roleplaying and is more streamlined than a traditional D&D campaign. It's possible that a Baldur's Gate 3 board game is already in the works, or at least that Larian Studios has considered it, especially if the Divinity Original Sin board game was a commercial success.

Baldur's Gate Already Has A Pretty Amazing Board Game

Baldur's Gate fans can rejoice, as there is actually already a Baldur's Gate board game to get stuck into while waiting for Larian to, hopefully, make a BG3 board game. Betrayal at Baldur's Gate is a modular board game in which players progress through an ever-changing city completing scenarios. There's plenty to see and do, including taking on infamous D&D monsters, as well as the potential for a traitor to arise in the player's team.

What makes Betrayal at Baldur's Gate such an intriguing board game experience is its sheer level of replayability, with the modular world and varied scenarios allowing players to have a vastly different experience each time. Fortunately, for miniature fans, it comes with pre-painted miniatures representing the various characters, as well as a host of other great pieces to play around with. While it doesn't feature the same characters as BG3, it's about as close as players can get to a Baldur's Gate board game right now.

There is still the potential that Larian will invest in a Baldur's Gate 3 board game, or at the very least try it on Kickstarter to see if there's interest in it. However, it's highly likely that should a Baldur's Gate 3 board game Kickstarter project pop up, it'll get funded almost instantaneously, especially if it features the game's incredible cast as playable characters. For now, players will have to start up their hundredth playthrough of Baldur's Gate 3, pick up the Divinity Original Sin board game, and wait with bated breath for Larian to announce a BG3 board game.
