Summary

  • Baldur's Gate 3's Grym boss fight in the Adamantine Forge can be challenging, but there's a trick.
  • Activating the Grym fight from a distance allows the party to stay safe while continually attacking.
  • Defeating Grym with ranged damage can earn an achievement for not having to use the forge's hammer.

Some of Baldur's Gate 3's boss fights can actually be pretty tough, but even in the most challenging scenarios, there are usually one or two ways to turn the situation to the party's advantage. The turn-based combat system and complex environmental arenas add a lot of flexibility to encounters, making fights much more than just a numbers game. A healthy dose of randomness can still swing things against even the most prepared party, but with a bit of luck, it's usually possible to push through.

One particularly intimidating Baldur's Gate 3 fight can be found at the Grymforge, where the Adamantine Forge offers the opportunity to forge a powerful weapon or piece of armor that can outdo other options available in Act 1 of the game. Unfortunately for the party, the forge is defended by a golem called Grym, which might seem too powerful and tanky for the party to handle. Luckily, it can be damaged more effectively by overheating it with lava and then slamming it with the forge's massive hammer, making the fight much more manageable for a party in the know.

Baldur’s Gate 3: Where To Find Adamantine Slag & What It’s For

Baldur’s Gate 3 is brimming with items, although many range in usefulness. Adamantine Slags are one seemingly important item around the Grymforge.

Activating BG3's Grym Fight At Range Protects The Party

Levers Can Be Triggered With Arrows And Spells

Even with this tactic, it can still be hard to defeat Grym at the Adamantine Forge without the party's health evaporating first, and that's where a particularly elegant trick comes into play. As described by Reddit 13Urdt35, it's possible to shoot the wheel that opens the lava valve to start the fight, meaning that the party doesn't have to actually hang around on the battlefield itself. Instead, they can travel down beforehand and set up the forge before fast traveling back to trigger the valve, releasing Grym upon an empty stage.

By staying elevated and sticking to ranged attacks on Grym, even a group of adventurers with meager health pools doesn't have to be at risk of getting downed. Doing chip damage at a distance still isn't as fast as a well-played fight that uses the forge's hammer, but there are more ways to hurt him than just spells and arrows. As pointed out by Sleepwalker109, this can be a great time to make use of Baldur's Gate 3's surplus of random objects, which put up some consistent damage numbers when hurled at Grym.

Sticking to this method makes it possible to get an achievement called "A Grym Fate" that's bestowed on anyone who kills Grym without using the forge's hammer, making it a great tactic for achievement hunters.

Baldur's Gate 3 Has Great Options For Ranged Damage

Grym Can Still Go Down Quickly

It's also possible to activate the lever for the hammer from a distance, although making full use of this strategy a bit more dependent on having the right tools at hand. When keeping the party entirely out of reach, the spell minor illusion can be a great way to lure Grym into the center for a hammer strike. Otherwise, keeping one tanky character on the lower level makes it easy to bait him while keeping the rest of the party safe, although some healing or resurrection might ultimately be in order.

Baldur's Gate 3: How To Find (& Use) The Adamantine Forge

To explore the Adamantine Forge in Baldur's Gate 3, the party must find a safe route, and locate gear molds and Mithral Ore to craft Adamantine gear.

The most amusing way to take down Grym in Baldur's Gate 3 is significantly more specific than a standard ranged battle, but it does still take use of the height advantage. A druid can take on the form of an owlbear and use the Crushing Flight ability to deliver upward of 1,000 damage when leaping down from above, taking Grym out in one blow. This only works consistently when leaping next to him rather than directly targeting Grym, which seems to significantly reduce the ability's effectiveness.

It can still be a lot of fun to fight Grym on the ground level, so cheesing the fight by triggering everything from a range might not be the solution for everyone. All the same, it's an incredibly simple way to stay alive through one of Baldur's Gate 3's hardest fights, and it's a technique that's certainly worth having in any party's back pocket. Grym can easily dissuade many adventurers from ever making proper use of the Adamantine Forge, but with a bit of cleverness and some remote activation, there's no reason not to reap the forge's rewards.
