Many places in Baldur's Gate 3 are only possible to reach with the Moon Lantern, an item you can get and fix to help your party move through the Shadow Curse. Obtained from two different places, the Moon Lantern item prevents you and your allies from taking damage in cursed lands. Quests for your companions and the main story require you to repair the Lantern to travel to specific areas.

The Shadow Curse in Baldur's Gate 3 has two different layers, one shallow and another dense. Simple light sources from torches or the Daylight spell give your party enough room to travel through the first layer, but the second will demand the Moon Lantern. Without the item, you'd only be walking to your group's deaths by trying to investigate the harsher layers of the shadow-cursed regions.

If you want to explore some initial places without the lantern, the Cleric Isobel in the Last Light Inn can give you a basic blessing that protects you from the first layer of the Shadow Curse.

Act 2 of Baldur's Gate 3 sends the party to the Shadow-Cursed Lands: a region shrouded in darkness that's filled with secrets and quests to complete.

Where To Find The Moon Lantern

Confront The Drider Using It

Baldur's Gate 3 Drider Kar'niss with Working Moonlantern

There are two ways to get a Moon Lantern in BG3: going to the Grymforge or getting a working one from the Drider Kar'niss in Act 2. The Grymforge hosts the room of Balthazar in Baldur's Gate 3, the home of a powerful undead priest in the Moonrise Towers. Unfortunately, this Moon Lantern might be easier to find, but it is incomplete and must be fixed before it can offer aid against the Shadow Curse.

There are no ways to fix the broken Moon Lantern you find at the Grymforge, but it gives your character a better idea of how the item works when you encounter it later in the story.

Baldur's Gate 3: Should You Save Isobel Or Side With Marcus At The Last Light Inn?

The Last Light Inn presents a major Baldur's Gate 3 choice, but between helping Isobel and Marcus, one option has far more advantages than the other.

The other way to find a Moon Lantern comes after the battle at the Last Light Inn in Baldur's Gate 3. Here, you will meet the Harpers, a group that plans to ambush a group of cultists who can traverse through this region's accursed areas. This group is led by a horrifying spider hybrid Drider named Kar'niss, who you can convince to give you his working Moon Lantern.

You can also side with the Harpers and kill Kar'niss to take his lantern, which will automatically let your party into the deeper layers of the Shadow Curse. Further investigation using the information discovered from the broken lantern reveals that a living Pixie powers this item. Like many choices in Baldur's Gate 3, you can either continue harming the Pixie to use this item's ability or set them free.

How To Win The Battle At Last Light Inn

Keep Harper Allies Alive

Those looking to use the Harper's aid to get the Moon Lantern will want to win the fight at Last Light Inn with minimal casualties. You won't want to settle for barely surviving this fight, as anyone who lives could be a useful companion against Kar'niss later. One of your most important objectives here should be to save Isobel from being killed, as she will be an important character to have at your side.

The Last Light Inn fight doesn't start until you start talking to Isobel, so take some time to prepare or rest before speaking to her.

The Last Light Inn battle takes place against Flaming Fist Marcus and his hellspawn if you choose to side with Isobel and the Harpers. Allied characters will be scattered all over the Inn, so you should have at least one member of your party go help the nearest person to defeat whoever they're fighting fast.

Team up on Marcus or lock him down with a spell in Baldur's Gate 3, like Hold Person, to free up your party to go around the rest of the Inn. While capable, the Harpers need help and are the best resource to finish this fight fast. Try to heal Isobel and the Harpers if you can to keep them alive, as having more turns on your side is the key to making this fight manageable.

There is a small secret to the fight against Marcus at the Last Light Inn. Here is how to ensure you will save Isobel in Baldur’s Gate 3.

How To Use The Moon Lantern

Utilize The Blessing Of A Pixie

A player holding a Moonlantern in Baldur's Gate 3, with a pixie in the foreground.

Once you have the working Moon Lantern, you can apply the "Pixie's Blessing" to your party. This ive ability gives any creature affected immunity to the Shadow Curse, allowing you to walk in the cursed lands unaffected. Traveling between Acts may cause you to lose this effect temporarily, but it can be restored using a Filigreed Feywild Bell item or by asking the Pixie to apply it again.

The Moon Lantern is not needed as you explore Moonrise Towers, as this location has several Moon Lanterns in its halls all working at the same time to protect its residents from the Shadow Curse.

Unfortunately, the blessing of the Pixie inside the Moon Lantern does not provide any additional effects for any characters. No class build in Baldur's Gate 3 will pair with the Moon Lantern, as it is mainly a key item used to progress further into Act 2. That being said, the Lantern does open up many more areas for you to explore, which could lead to powerful gear and important side quests with a lot of loot.

You can choose to free the Pixie within the Moon Lantern or force them to keep applying the blessing to your group. The best option here should be to free the fey creature, as it is then more likely to help you in future with another blessing since you won't be able to get or fix another Moon Lantern in Baldur's Gate 3.
