Halsin and Minthara are two opposing companions in Baldur’s Gate 3. Halsin represents the good path, while Minthara is very evil-aligned. Their intended quest lines involve thwarting the other. But by keeping both stories unresolved, it becomes possible to recruit the pair together.
There are other repercussions for getting the two faction leaders. You won’t be able to complete helping Sazza, the goblin at Emerald Grove in Baldur’s Gate 3. Zevlor and his band of Teiflings will also be automatically expelled by the Druids, leading to many tragedies in later acts. This includes the loss of Dammon, a key NPC who takes part in Karlach’s personal quest.
Ignoring the Druids vs Goblins Raid
While not required, things will progress more smoothly while playing as a character with high Persuasion and Performance skills. The ability to cast magic like Invisibility and Silence are also extremely useful. These can be achieved by making the main character a Bard in Baldur’s Gate 3. As a backup, also consider taking direct control of Wyll or Gale to have access to lots of utility spells.
Upon clearing the tutorial on the Nautiloid, rush as soon as possible toward the Goblin Camp. Companions can still be picked up along the way, mostly to fill in party slots. Make a few speech checks to get by the Goblin guards and go straight to the Worg Pens. Here, rescues Halsin by defeating all the Goblins and Worgs inside. Talk to Halsin, and agree to his plan of defeating the three goblin leaders, but tell him to wait for now.
Without fighting anyone else in the Goblin Camp - or speaking to Minthara at all - progress to Act 2 by entering the Mountain . This route is guarded by level 5-6 Githyanki warriors but can be placated with a high Persuasion check. Otherwise, you may need to level up first to defeat them in a fair fight.
Taking the Mountain will seal off the Emerald Grove forever. You should finish up any side quests there, as long as they don’t require killing the goblin army leaders. This includes being sure to recruit Karlach, Wyll, and Lae’zel before venturing forth.
Rescuing Minthara at Moonrise Towers
The Mountain is a transitional area before reaching the full map of Act 2, the Shadow-Cursed Lands. Lae’zel will demand that players focus on her side quest in Baldur’s Gate 3, the Githyanki Creche Yllek. Either use dialogue options to postpone this request or complete her personal quest before moving on - otherwise Lae’zel may storm off.
The Mountain itself is crawling with powerful undead, including level 6 Death Shepherds that can revive each other. To prevent the chain resurrections, weaken them to low hitpoints and kill them simultaneously with area magic like Fireball or Spirit Guardians. Alternatively, use Invisibility to avoid a fight.
Once in the Shadow-Cursed Lands, you will need to gain a Moon Lantern. The easiest method is to approach the half-orc Kansif and a Performance check to summon the drider Kar’niss. If the check fails, one can also ambush Kar’niss for the lantern, but will have to make several speech checks to enter Moonrise Towers.
Enter the main hall of Moonrise Towers and take part in Minthara’s hearing. Due to failing to obtain Shadowheart’s artifact, she will be punished. Convince Ketheric Thorm to imprison Minthara. Now, head down into the dungeons and free her by either tricking or killing the guards. Cast Invisible on Minthara and walk her out the front gate. The next time you long rest at camp in Baldur’s Gate 3, she will offer to the team.
Protecting Thaniel
After obtaining Minthara, decline to put her in the active party as many of the cultists will now have a grudge against the Drow Paladin. You will need to venture northward, back into the Shadow-Curse, and towards the House of Healing. Equip a Moon Lantern in someone’s off-hand to withstand the curse.
If Kar’niss lived, you will need to get a second Moon Lantern in Baldur's Gate 3. In this case, speak with Disciple Z’rell on the top of the tower and agree to take on a new mission. She will yield a key to Balthazar’s Room, which has a spare lantern.
Inside the House of Healing, locate Malus Thorm and his quartet of nuns on the ground floor. Either a skill check to have Malus kill himself, or defeat them all in combat. Loot the bodies to gain a lute owned by Art Callugh. Travel to the Last Light Inn and you will find Art ed out on a bed. Play his lute for him and he will spring up, informing you that he has located the mysterious Baldur’s Gate 3 NPC Thaniel and needs Halsin’s assistance.
Travel back to the Worg Pens and tell Halsin that the Emerald Grove was sealed by Kagha. He will be crestfallen but will agree to the player camp. Initiate a camp rest and inform him that Thaniel has been found by Aart. Halsin will ask you to meet him at the lakeshore of Last Light Inn. Go there and protect the portal Halsin creates for three full turns.
A large wave of enemies will spawn, but they have low levels and hitpoints. They will also ignore most of the party and instead focus fire on just the portal. This makes them easy to defeat or subdue with large area of effect spells, like Wall of Fire and Web.
After the set amount of turns, Halsin will return with Thaniel in tow. Enter into camp and Halsin will agree to finally the team. Halsin and Minthara can now be used together. However, it is clear Larian did not fully intend for this story outcome in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Halsin and Minthara have no dialogue with each other, and will often repeat lines if they are brought to the same story event. They will also sometimes overlap and clip into each other while at camp. Due to the high demand of having a “perfect” route, it is possible that future patches or a Definitive Edition may expand on having both Minthara and Halsin together.
