Patch 2 for Baldur’s Gate 3 includes a new ending for Karlach and Wyll. By completing their personal quests in a certain way, it is possible for the pair - along with any main characters - to share a single epilogue. While this conclusion was previously hinted at, it was never fully shown and had some other strange bugs associated with it.
Patch 2 is available on both Steam and GOG PC players. Steam automatically applies updates, but GOG Galaxy does allow players to opt out and still play older releases of Baldur’s Gate 3. For PlayStation 5 owners, patch 2 is planned to be part of the official launch. But, it is still a good idea to double-check the version number when first booting the game.
Party Composition Requirements
To watch the full t ending, both Wyll and Karlach need to be companions. They also need to have considerable approval to prevent leaving the team. You and any other co-op players will need to select a new custom character or one of the remaining original characters. This could be the Dark Urge, Shadowheart, Lae’zel, Astarion, or Gale.
Many of the quests require at least one party space to be filled by Karlach or Wyll for their related scenes. This means it will be impossible to view this ending if playing multiplayer with a full team of four people. A slight workaround is to temporally drop to only three players, speak to Withers at camp, and ask him to replace a custom hero with Karlach or Wyll. Once their quests are complete, the final player is free to re the team.
The vast majority of quests just involve Karlach or Wyll talking to someone. A few also result in engaging in combat encounters. It is a good idea to build up their classes both for intense fights and a possible speech check. Most other conversations can be handled by the main character.
Romancing Karlach
Viewing this ending requires at least one of the main characters to be in a romance with Karlach. To avoid any glitches during co-op play, this should be the actual session host. You should also not try to actively romance two companions at the same time. Otherwise, there is a risk of another romance overriding the conclusion.
The romance check is only done at the end of the game. You can make a separate saved game and begin courting Karlach at the last minute. This can prevent the need to reload hours back or even completely restart the entire campaign.
Pleasing Karlach is mostly tied in with her normal companion quest. She is searching for a way to repair her infernal engine. This is done by finding Infernal Iron hidden around the world. The easiest one to gain is in the Blighted Village, inside the locked forge where you can make Master Work weapons. A Rogue, like Astarion, can easily lockpick the door; another option is to lurk through the town’s well and access the forge’s basement.
Take the Infernal Iron to Dammon in the Emerald Grove, and he will make the first steps to helping Karlach. More pieces of the alloy can be found in Goblin Camp, Grymforge, and Zhentarim Hideout. Dammon can only add such reinforcement at the Last Light Inn. This requires you to select the good path and defeat all Goblin Leaders before the Druids finish the ritual at the Grove. Otherwise, Dammon and many other Tiefling refugees will perish.
Dammon’s appearance at Last Light Inn is also linked to the Strange Ox found at Emerald Grove. Killing the Ox can cause Dammon to fall through the floor, become unresponsive, or even become hostile. If the Ox has died, you may need to reload before that occurrence.
Saving Duke Ulder Ravengard
To involve Wyll in Karlach’s story, you will need to deny his accession to dukedom. The best method to accomplish this is to completely save his father, Duke Ulder Ravengard. During Act 3, he is being held hostage in the Underwater Prison at Iron Throne. Once first located in his cell, Ulder Ravengard will become a temporary playable character.
The fight is normally against many Sahuagin who will funnel into the center one at a time. Use many area-of-effect and/or battlefield control spells like Sleet Storm and Hunger of Hadar to keep them away from the duke. Mizora will also likely show up if she is angered by Wyll, and sends in a wave of exploding Combustion Belly Spiderlings. The trick is that you don’t need to kill every enemy - the fight will end as soon as Ulder Ravengard escapes. Use healing and protection spells to keep him alive, and then just climb up the ladder to dash out of the prison.
Before entering the prison, take a long rest and Mizora will offer to reinforce the pact’s contract. If you agree, Ulder will automatically be rescued from the prison. While this avoids a tough fight, Mizora will still have heavy influence over Wyll.
Endgame Choices
With both quest outcomes finished, you can head towards the final portions of Baldur’s Gate 3. At the penultimate dungeon, you will encounter Orpheus. If Karlach is the active party, she will offer to devour him and transform herself into a Mind Flayer. Decline this offer and instead have either Orpheus change or let the Emperor devour the Githyanki prince - though, the latter can greatly anger Lae’zel.
After fully destroying the Absolute, the ending will start to play. During it, you - or at least the host - will be able to make some final dialogue choices. After most other allies have said their goodbyes, the focus will shift over to Karlach and her failing Infernal Engine. Wyll will propose the idea that the three of you should return to Avernus to save her. Agree to this, and the remaining parts of the ending will play as usual. After the credits will be an additional stinger, where all of you have arrived at the cusp of Avernus and will take on the numerous devils as a three-person hit squad.
